This is generally conceded to be the most famous restaurant in Austria, and it consistently ranks high on critics' lists. The setting is elegant, and extra touches include a trolley overflowing with freshly baked breads and, at the end of the meal, an outstanding selection of cheeses from Steirereck's own cheese cellar. Fish choices are plentiful and may include delicate smoked catfish, turbot in an avocado crust, or char with mashed potatoes on a bed of white garlic sauce. Also good is the quail in red wine sauce with zucchini cannelloni or lamb with crepes and spinach cooked simply with garlic and olive oil. Reservations essential. Jacket and tie.
