Georgetown remains Washington's favorite shopping area. This is the capital's center for famous citizens, as well as for restaurants, bars, nightclubs, and trendy shops. Although Georgetown is not on a subway line (the nearest Metro, Foggy Bottom/GWU, is a 10- to 15-minute walk from the shops) and parking is difficult at best, people still flock here. National chains are beginning to overtake the specialty shops that first gave the district its allure, but the historic neighborhood is still charming, and its street scene lively. In addition to housing tony antiques, elegant crafts, and high-style shoe and clothing boutiques, Georgetown offers wares that attract local college students and young people: books, music, and fashions from familiar names like Banana Republic and Urban Outfitters. Most stores lie to the east and west on M Street and to the north on Wisconsin. Metro: Foggy Bottom/GWU.
