This ancient castle now houses a compelling museum of artifacts dating back as far as the 4th century.

Limassol Castle is an imposing sandstone castle that stands guard over the city’s old harbor. In addition to offering scenic views of the city from its rooftop, this centuries-old fortification is home to the Cyprus Medieval Museum, which displays artifacts from Cyprus’ Early Christian era and onwards.

It is believed that the castle was constructed in the late 12th century by King Guy de Lusignan. According to legend, Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre at the castle’s chapel in 1191. Over the centuries, the castle was repeatedly damaged by invaders and earthquakes. The Ottomans rebuilt it in the late 16th century and incorporated some aspects of the original structure.

Explore the interior of the castle, which has been transformed into the exhibition space of the Cyprus Medieval Museum. Spread across two floors, the museum includes an interesting collection of artifacts, which date between the 4th and 19th centuries and are organized by theme. These displays offer insight into Cyprus’ cultural and artistic evolution over the years.

Take your time walking through the museum, admiring historic weaponry, wood carvings and mosaics. Don’t miss the collection of 12th to 18th century pottery, the Frankish and Venetian grave markers, as well as 7th-century silver plates from the Byzantine era.

In the first-floor Knights’ Hall, you’ll find two suits of armor and rare coins. Look for Byzantine, Gothic and Renaissance sculptures, reliefs and carvings in the Main Hall. Save time for the black-and-white photographs of Cyprus’ Gothic and Renaissance architecture, found in the Main Lobby.

From the top floor of the museum, follow the steps leading up to the castle’s rooftop terrace. This flat stone roof was once a strategic defense point for the castle. Today, it serves as a popular viewing area. Take a few photos of Limassol and its harbor, which extend scenically from below the battlements.

Limassol Castle is located in the old town of Limassol, nearby the harbor. The castle is daily and there is an admission fee.
