Wander through gardens and lush grounds, tour the grand mansion and learn about the history of this opulent estate in Asheville, North Carolina.

Visit Biltmore Estate, the largest privately owned house in the United States and tour its magnificent grounds. Stop at the winery and Antler Hill Village and walk through the striking 75-acre (30-hectare) formal gardens. Tour the estate and enjoy a wide range of activities. Discover many of the 250 vintage-style rooms in Vanderbilt’s Biltmore House, including a seven-story-high banquet hall, a library with over 10,000 books, an indoor pool, a bowling alley and more.

Admire the French Renaissance château-style architecture designed by New York architect Richard Morris Hunt. George Washington Vanderbilt built the mansion on the Biltmore Estate in the late 1800s and it is still owned by one of Vanderbilt's descendants.

Explore the vast gardens designed by the New York City Central Park landscape architect Frederick Law Olmsted. Admire the rolling lawns, seasonal flowers and shrub gardens. Experience the 8,000-acre (3,000-hectare) grounds on mountain bike or by horseback. Float down the serene French Broad River with a guided raft trip or paddle on a self-guided kayak tour. Ride through the beautiful Biltmore Estate in an elegant carriage drawn by Belgian draft horses.

Relax in Antler Hill Village and learn about the Vanderbilt family in the Legacy exhibition hall. View the stunning Biltmore collection of priceless objects. Enjoy award-winning wines on a guided tour through the winery. During summer, listen to live music on the tranquil village green.

Purchase a day pass or stay overnight and dine in luxury accommodations on the estate. Plan activities at the outdoor adventure center. Daytime admission includes access to the historic gardens and Antler Hill Village, a self-guided tour of Biltmore House and a guided winery tour with free wine tasting.

Use the free shuttle from the Biltmore House on-site parking lots to the front door of the mansion. Visitors are encouraged to drive between locations on the vast estate. Be sure to experience the special candlelight tour if visiting around Christmas. Many rooms of the estate are decorated with themed Christmas trees.

End your day at Biltmore Estate with ice cream from the Creamery. Tour other parts of the fascinating area around Asheville.

Be prepared to pay a hefty sum to gain entry. We'll visit next time around, but the gate attendant was very nasty. We were walking up and she nastily turned us away, told us we'd need a car to buy a ticket.

If you ever visited Hearst Castle in California, or Vizcaya Museum and Gardens in Florida, and you were impressed by the architecture and gardens, then we suggest visiting this attraction when in North Carolina though the entrance fee is rather pricey. Biltmore is one of the greatest and grandest estates in America. The house is simply gorgeous and opulent and sumptuous. We spent about 3 hours but could have stayed longer. Do not forget to bring your camera.

If you are visiting to see the Downton Abbey exhibit, it is not located in the house, but in two different locations on the grounds. The actual exhibit is at Amherst in the Deerpark area of the property, and the exhibit of the clothes is in one of the buildings near the Village Hotel (you may be able to see the clothes without a ticket if you can get to the hotel area). The exhibit takes at least an hour to really see everything (if its not too crowded), and the clothes exhibit can be seen in about 30 minutes. If you park in the lots, shuttles come around every 20 minutes to take you where you want to go.

If you use Waze, you’ll need a copilot, as the route suggested is maze like.
