Cycle along nature paths and marvel at the diverse wildlife and thick forest that surrounds this tranquil lake in the Jasper National Park.

In the shadow of imposing Pyramid Mountain is a picturesque lake and one of the highlights of Jasper National Park. The tranquil setting of Pyramid Lake is popular with families and nature lovers for its excellent views and picnic areas. Choose from the many hiking trails that depart from the town of Jasper and pass through the scenic terrain of Jasper National Park.

Note how the lake, which has an area of around 300 acres (121 hectares), is shaped like a kidney. Gaze up at the rocky peaks to the northwest that include Pyramid Mountain, Mount Kinross and Cairngorm. In winter, capture photos of the scenic blend of green forests and snow-capped mountains reflected in the placid water.

Follow hiking paths through woodland to appreciate the serenity of this natural setting. When at their largest, the imposing Douglas fir trees that can be found throughout the national park have a trunk diameter of around 3.3 feet (1 meter). Spot elk, deer, moose and even black and grizzly bears among the wildlife. Gaze up to the skies for barred owl, Barrow’s goldeneye and the pied-billed grebe.

Climb Pyramid Mountain for sweeping views of the sparkling lake and the surrounding countryside. Enjoy a picnic with your family at one of the many designated areas around the lake’s shores.

Rent a kayak, canoe or paddleboat from the Pyramid Lake Resort to take out on the water. Mountain biking, skating, and cross-country skiing equipment is also available. Embark on a guided horseback trip from the Jasper Riding Stables. Follow the Saturday Night Loop that runs alongside lakes, ponds and trees for 17 miles (29 kilometers) for a great overview of the park.

Learn about the secret battleship made of ice that lies beneath the lake’s surface. The construction was part of a 1940s wartime project to build an unsinkable ship, but plans were scrapped due to rising costs.

Pyramid Lake is just to the west of the Athabasca River in the heart of the Jasper National Park, approximately 10 minutes drive north of Jasper. The park is open daily the visitor center is open during business hours. A fee applies for admission to the park and on-site parking lots can be found throughout the national park. Pass Jasper Park Lodge, Riley Lake and Patricia Lake on your way here.
