Learn about the life of King Richard III in York at an interactive museum set inside the city’s largest medieval gateway.

Monk Bar is the biggest and most richly-ornamented gateway of York’s ancient City Walls. It takes its name from the monks that once lived on the grounds of nearby York Minster. Admire the well-preserved architectural beauty of this medieval landmark, which dates back to the 14th century and was designed to operate as self-sufficient fort. During your visit to Monk Bar, learn about the short and tumultuous reign of Richard III via hands-on exhibits in the museum.

The gatehouse is a four-tier structure, of which the upper section was added by Richard III during the War of the Roses. Two shields attached to the outer face portray the coat of arms of York. Another shield features the coats of arms of England and France. The portcullis contains its original winding equipment and was used daily up until 1970.

Look for spaces, known as murder holes, in the walls, from where defenders could aim boiling water, stones and other missiles at invaders. Circular rooms inside the turrets served to imprison rebellious Catholics in the 1500s. Note the presence of three stone male figures, who appear to be dropping stones from the gatehouse’s towers.

Inside the gatehouse is a museum called Richard III Experience at Monk Bar. It highlights the life of Richard III, the last monarch of the House of Plantagenet, from his childhood days to his succession to the English throne. Experience the battles he fought at the Wars of the Roses and his untimely death at the Battle of Bosworth. See replicas of armor and weapons, try on a knight’s helmet and dress up in medieval clothing.

The gatehouse stands on the northeastern section of the City Walls. It’s about a 20-minute walk from York train station. Steps at the south side of the gate access the City Walls.

You can visit Monks Bar at anytime of the day. The museum is open daily, except for Christmas Eve, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The admission price for the museum also includes entry to the Henry VII Experience at Micklegate Bar museum.
