This huge 17th-century mosque is a cornerstone of Islam in Hyderabad and can accommodate up to 10,000 people at a time.

Mecca Masjid is one of the oldest and largest mosques in India. Its main hall is massive and can accommodate up to 10,000 people. Its central location and important history make this mosque a hub for religious devotees and visitors alike. The site includes a water fountain, marble tombs, benches and enormous arches.

The granite mosque was built in the late 17th century and takes its name from the Grand Mosque in Mecca.

Enjoy the peaceful ambiance around the water fountain at the mosque’s entrance. Many visitors pause here to take a group photograph in front of the fountain and to capture photos of the structure’s imposing facade, arches and traditional minaret designs. The main arch was built with bricks made from soil from Mecca, the holiest spot in Islam.

Visit the solemn resting place of former sovereigns. Their dignified marble graves lie in the first courtyard from the entrance.

Relax on the black benches by the pond. Local legend says that whoever sits here will one day return to the same spot. Relish the view of Hyderabad’s streets and stay to watch the setting sun.

Non-Muslims are forbidden from entering the mosque, but the imposing building is easy to appreciate from the outside. Inside, the main hall is 75 feet (23 meters) high and 15 brick arches support the domed roof.

The mosque is open every day to Muslims who come to pray. Non-Muslims can visit the grounds free of charge. Women should wear head coverings and all should have long pants and covered shoulders to show respect. Remove your shoes as you enter the mosque and expect to pay the attendant.

Mecca Masjid is located to the south of the Musi River in the center of the city. The nearest bus stop is Charminar, which is next to the mosque. There’s a train station 1.4 miles (2.2 kilometers) to the east of the site.

After visiting Mecca Masjid, walk to the nearby Chowmahalla Palace and Charminar. Buy souvenirs such as bangles and jewelry from the Laad Bazaar and Pather Gatti markets around Charminar.
