Society Hill Hotel

Very poor condition

Staff of hotel was friendly, but the hotel was in poor state of disrepair. To enter and register you have to go into the cafe and get the bartender to unlock the connecting door. Then you walk up the rickety narrow stairs to the second floor where ther is a small hall and receptionist in a small office who gives you a key and sents to to walk up however many floors to your very small room. I went to turn on the light switch. Nothing happened because there were just wires hanging bare out of the wall. Not even a fixture or wiring nuts covering the live wires. I went to turn on the nearest table lamp, but it did not work. The other lamp at the far end of the room did work. there was an old window unit type air conditioner in the window, but it was not sealed. All of the street noise came in. In downtown Philly in a deteriorated area, there were noisy trucks and drunks all night long (on a Wednesday). Room was exceedingly hot with no thermostat. Next morning I learned that there was one thermostat in the hall that controlled all the rooms on that floor. Room smelled of urine and there was trash under the bed. Hotel was only 40% cheaper than the high class Sheritan 3 blocks away in a very upscale neighborhood; therefore, I find the Society Hill Hotel a very poor value. It is more of a flophouse you might expect to rent by the hour. I have stayed in much nicer hostels for a fraction of the cost.

All I needed was a place to sleep and this place was perfect, especially for the price! The best thing I enjoyed about the place was the pub on the main level. Great food and beer selection, and good nightlife.
