Gem of a Hotel

The Golden Wheel Hotel was such a delight! It is perfectly located- right below Prague Castle ( about 5 minutes walk) on a charming street lined with colorful buildings and great architecture. Another 10 minute walk and you’re at the Charles Bridge and on your way to the Old Town Square. My room was spacious and clean, and the bathroom had a great soaking tub and even a heated towel rack! The included breakfast buffet every morning was one of the best I’ve had in any of my many stays in Europe. Another rave for the staff, who were always genuinely friendly and helpful, and made us feel extremely welcome. This hotel is a gem and I would highly recommend it!

Wonderful former palace

I loved, loved, loved my stay in this hotel! I would love to go back sometime. My room was very clean. The staff is very friendly and helpful. Everyone spoke English. The hotel is conveniently located. I always felt safe walking alone in the area. It just doesn’t get any better than staying in a 500 year old former palace.

Traveler's tip on dining

Lots of small cafes very near.

great location in Prague

We cannot say enough about the courtesy and helpfulness of the entire staff at The Golden Wheel. Throughout our eight night stay, everyone was gracious, ready and willing to help in any situation--from arranging day trips to assisting with small concerns. Everyone spoke English as well, a real plus that was gratefully appreciated. The room was amazingly spacious, and nicely furnished. Beds were comfortable and the bathroom was immaculate. The breakfast was a fantastic selection of hot and cold selections with a variety to satisfy every taste. An extra-special "plus" was the garden terrace--a great place to relax and unwind after a day of sightseeing. Free high-speed internet access facilitated communication with everyone back home, too. This is truly an excellent hotel!

Lovely Hotel, location, and extremely helpful staff.

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at the Golden Wheel. The staff was beyond helpful, giving us great recommendations as to where to dine and what to see and generally friendly and quick to give assistance. It’s a beautiful setting and building.

fine small hotel

We were really pleased with this hotel in a painstakingly restored and attractively decorated building. We had a spectacular view of Prague castle from our room. Breakfast was excellent with lots of fresh fruit and both hot and cold choices. The location is about halfway up the hill to Prague Castle and walking distance to the Charles Bridge.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

The public transportation system is cheap and convenient.

Small Gem in Prague

Great hotel and town. Two days is more than enough to see the town. The hotel is in walking distance to the Castle and to Charles Bridge. It is located on a very quaint street with easy access to quite a few good restaurants.

Traveler's tip on dining

Ask the concierge for recommendations. They gave us great places to eat.

A warm welcome

On Nerudova, the Royal Way (or what was once the King’s approach to Prague Castle), The Golden Wheel stands out from its neighboring inns and hotels. The staff is warm, helpful and accommodating, which made our stay very enjoyable. The rooms are simple, yet comfortable and spacious. Ours looked out onto the busy street and over the rooftops of the castle district. There is also a rooftop terrace accessible with spectacular views of the district. The complimentary breakfast in the Accadia Cafe Bar was great, including fresh fruit, pastries, eggs, meat and cheeses--enough to fuel an entire day of walking and exploring. Internet access is free in the rooms and there is a computer available for guest use, as well. The only drawback to staying at this hotel, or any hotel on this street, is the location. Nerudova is all things touristy, one souvenir shop or cafe after another. For those who want to be in the center of it all, it’s perfect. However, for those who want a quieter setting, or may have trouble negotiating the somewhat steep incline of Nerudova, this might not be the place for you. For us, it was wonderful.

Traveler's tip on dining

U Sedmi Svabu, just off Nerudova at Jansky Vrsek 14, is a medieval tavern with traditional Czech fare. The menu is varied--beef, goulash, pork knuckle, fish--and prices are reasonable. Try the ribs; they’re excellent!

Nice place to stay away from the tourist center

Rooms MUCH laarger than most small hotels. A short but UP HILL walk from Charkes Bridge. Half way to the castle area! Rear room preferable - better view and much quieter. Stree in front can be busy but if it’s not too hot to close the double windows, it will be quiet enough. BUT if you don’t like walking up the hill a couple of times a day - stay on the other side of the river!

Traveler's tip on dining

The little pub at the very top of the street(on the way to the castle) has a lovely view and surprisingly good food.

excellent small hotel

Lovely small hotel very near to Prague Castle. Very helpful staff, spacious rooms. Only downside would be street noise at all hours affecting rooms with a street view. Otherwise, an excellent hotel in a great location.

Almost Perfect

This was a really great little hotel. The room was extremely quiet---the quietest room we’ve ever had in Europe. The staff were extremely friendly, and the buffet breakfast was a great way to start the day. If we were forced to make a complaint, it would simply be that a few stains on the bedspread were questionable (simply removing it before sleeping was an easy fix), and the shower had a slight leak around the base. Still, the benefits far outweighed these trivial items. It was within walking distance to everything, right beneath Prague Castle, and close to several different restaurants. We would definitely stay here again, if we ever make it back to Prague.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Definitely use the Cedaz service getting to and from the airport into your hotel in Prague. They’ll carry up to 4 people for a much cheaper price than a taxi. They’re fast and reliable---and they’ll even drop you off right in front of your hotel. They have a kiosk at the airport to get you started, and you can call them the night before to pick you up at your hotel in the morning.

A very nice and romatic place to stay in

Really enjoyed staying at that small hotel. Placed right by the castle and the best area of Prague. Hotel service was very caring! Overall, it is a nice romantic place to stay in.

Great Hotel with Wonderful Service

Right by the Prague Castle on very charming street. I really enjoyed the hotel and it’s amenities. The bed was a little hard for my back. I’m normally not bothered by this...but it was hard for a pregnant woman.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Buy a ticket at the Prague Castle for the full tour - it lasts for two days and you can easily get their from the hotel to take advantage of your location (and feet).

Fabulous Experience

Both Prague and the Golden Wheel were the highlights of our 3 week European trip. The hotel provided the best accomodations we had during our stays in 5 European cities. The room was huge by European standards, quiet, there was Internet access a few steps away and no line waiting to use it. Bath facilities were modern and immaculate. The buffet breakfasts were superb! The staff was extremely friendly and could not have been more helpful. The location was perfect being midway between Prague Castle & the Charles Bridge. We are recommending the Golden Wheel to everyone we know who will be travelling to Prague as part of their European itineraries.

Traveler's tip on dining

David’s restaurant is a gem. It’s Zagat rated and definitely pricey, but the experience was well worth it.

The Golden Wheel was a pleasure

We truly enjoyed our stay at the Golden Wheel. The friendly staff were most accommodating and helpful. The location of the hotel couldn’t be more spectacular and breakfast was fantastic with plenty of options and delicious fresh food. We would highly recommend this hotel to anyone travelling to Prague.

Close and quiet

The Golden Wheel was an excellent choice for us during a 3 night stay over in Prague. The location is up the hill from the Old Town Square, so be prepared for a fair bit of hilly, cobblestone terrain. The Jr. Suite was spacious and modern (but up 3 flights of tight stairs). The hotel staff was friendly and very accomodating- Their english was adequate. The breakfast buffet was very good and quite a pleasant suprise. Close enough to center city, but away from the bustle. Located on a steet with plenty of cafes and shops, but quiet in the evenings when the shops closed.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Try a Thai massage at any of a number of Thai massage parlors around town. Inexpensive (400 Kc/$27) for a half hour (600 Kc/$40) for an hour. Be prepared for Strong Hands! Relieves stress, but not a light touch.

A good Hike

Golden Wheel was an excellent find - Thanks to Expedia reveiws. It was in an historic area, so we got a feel of Prague from another era. The rooms were very large with excellent veiws of the castle from the back or Nerudova from the front rooms. Breakfast was great;anything you could want/need. The bathrooms were funky and modern. I would stay here again! Golden Wheel is half way up the hill to Prague Castle. If you can’t walk hills and stairs, this might not be the place for you. I thought it was perfect and it was great fun to walk around Prague Castle at night alone.

Location! Location!

This hotel was a pleasant surprise. I had read the reviews but still unprepared for the friendliness of the staff. The breakfast buffet was great! I had a room at the front of the hotel & just loved watching the street below! The castle view is wonderful. I walked everywhere! It snowed my last morning which turned the area into a fantasy land. I did take a day trip to Kunta Hora...used the train & had no problems getting there. The Czech people were wonderful! Most know English & want to talk to you! I will return!

Room with at View

The Golden Wheel is located just below the Prague castle on the main street leading up to the castle. If you book a room on the top floor as we did, you can see down on the city (through skylight-like windows) and up to castle (through small portal windows - although the best view of the castle is from the city at night when the castle is lighted). The top floor is split level, with sloping walls upstairs and downstairs that eat into the available space - however, the upstairs portion had its own bathroom, wooden floors and a loft-like bed, which made it a cozy place to sleep. The hotel is small, the staff were very friendly, and the breakfast (standard Western fare) was good. There was not much in the way of good restaurants nearby, although Prague is not much of a town for fine dining anyway (think Vienna with plenty of pork). We were there in October when it was fairly cool, and the hotel controlled the heat, which it only turned on in the morning (however, the room did have several air conditioners that could be controlled, which would probably useful in the summer). By the way, the tourist areas were fairly full in October so I would imagine it is jam packed in the summer, which may make getting to the hotel by taxis difficult during the day with the steady stream of castle visitors. Nonetheless, it is a wonderful city to visit, especially if you are interested baroque architecture.

Fantastic hotel, excellent service, perfect location

Excellent hotel. The staff is very helpful, even arranged for a taxi to pick us up late at night at the train station (highly recommend that you do that instead of searching on your own). Wonderful breakfast. Highly recommended.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

This hotel is near the Prague castle complex. See that first, then cross the Charles Bridge for the rest of the sightseeing.

Nice Location, but could do Better with Cleanliness

I stayed at the Golden Wheel for two days last week. Pros: location, service, style of hotel, breakfast buffet included. Cons: Lots of stairs make baggage transport difficult (but our front desk person was kind enough to help carry bags), sheets were not changed (a major pet peeve!) and bed spread had clearly seen a good time before we arrived. ;-) Overall, experience was positive, but I would try another place next time.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

We hired a personal tour guide -- about $30 an hour for two people (Sarka’s personal guide). It was the highlight of our trip given that we only had two days. It is well worth the investment.

Very impressed!

We stayed 4 nights in this hotel. The receptionists and restaurant staffs are always very helpful and friendly. The hotel is very clean and breakfast is very good. The hotel is in great location. Only 10 minutes walk to Charles Bridge and 5 minutes walk to Prague Castle. Very easy to get to the hotel from the airport and vice versa. Since we don’t have heavy luggages to carry, instead of taking a cab we took the bus (#119) from the airport and then took the Metro (subway) from Devjicka station and got off at Malostranska station w/c is about 7 minutes walk to the hotel. Total commute time (by bus and metro) from the airport to Malostranska station is about 35 minutes. Would highly recommend this hotel.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

- take tram and metro instead of cab to go to places or wear comfortable shoes and walk - if you wish to visit Cesky Krumlov, buy bus tickets from Florenc bus station at least a day before
