What to expect: The cozy lobby of this 1926 hotel is richly appointed with antique wood furnishings and oil paintings. A bronze statue of Neptune, borne aloft by seahorses and mermen, stands guard by the patio entrance. Designated a historic landmark by the city of San Diego, the Park Manor does not have in-suite air conditioning, but supplies floor and ceiling fans.

Amenity highlights: A complimentary Continental breakfast buffet is offered each morning in the rooftop restaurant, which has indoor and outdoor seating with views of downtown San Diego and San Diego Bay. Another restaurant, located on the lower level, serves up contemporary Continental cuisine and live nightly entertainment. Each guest suite is uniquely appointed in a style favoring hardwood furnishings that are carved and inlaid.

Insider tip: Walk six blocks north on 5th Ave to the famous “Hillcrest” sign at the intersection with University Ave. The pedestrian-friendly Hillcrest neighborhood, with its locally owned boutiques, galleries, bookstores, restaurants, and sidewalk cafes, is the heart of San Diego’s vibrant gay-and-lesbian community.

The red-brick, Italian Renaissance-style Park Manor Suites is on the southern edge of the diverse and colorful Hillcrest neighborhood, across the street from Balboa Park and a half-mile from the San Diego Zoo.

The Top of the Park Penthouse restaurant, located on the hotel’s roof, serves lunch with views of downtown San Diego and San Diego Bay. A complimentary Continental breakfast buffet is provided for guests in the restaurant each morning.

On the lower level, the Inn at the Park Restaurant and Bar serves contemporary Continental cuisine and offers live entertainment nightly. The bar is popular among locals and has a friendly, neighborhood feel.
