Gem in Rome
The Grand Hotel Palatino in Rome was an excellant choice for our stay. It was convenient to transportation and the location was excellant. We stayed in a non smoking Executive Double the room was very comfortable and modern. We were impressed with the service at the Hotel, when we first arrived our tube drain would not open. We notified the front desk and by the time we rode the elevator to the room it was taken care of. The overall atmosphere was friendly and helpful. We also went on a tour of the Vatican through Appian Way tour arranged by Expedia there facility is within walking distance of the hotel The next time we go to Rome we will definitely stay there again.
Go in latter part of October the crowds have diminished and the weather is excellant

good hotel
Palatino hotel was overall good. The rooms were of decent size and pretty clean. Maintenence was good. Breakfast buffet really good. Charged a lot for internet access even with own laptop - use the internet cafe next door as very reasonable. Hotel staff were not that helpful. They were not eager to help. They told us to take the bus to Vatican (as the best way to get there). It took us almost an hour. We found out later there was a subway stop right next to the hotel which only took us 30 mins. Location was convenient - colosseum was right across the hotel and everything except Vatican was within 10-20 mins walking distance. Plenty of restuarants near the hotel - Italian, Chinese, Indian.

A Fine Hotel
This is a fine well run hotel. It is large and there are groups of tourists coming and going but they manage it all very well. It has no particular "warmth" but we found that typical of the service industry in Italy. The location is outstanding for getting in and out of town - right by the subway and close to the train station with a train to the airport. It is very convienient to all of the ancient ruins. It is not convienient to the Pantheon area which is billed as the "heart of Rome" and probably has better restaurants and night life.
Traveler's tip
If youre interested in a real bar, as you leave the hotel go right and immediately down the stairs. On the street at the bottom of the stairs is an Irish Pub with a full bar and good beer selection. We did each days cocktail hour there.
