A pleasant haven on the Ionic

This hotel was a delight to stay at! The building, rooms, and grounds are beautifully maintained, with an almost Caribbean, open-air feel. The garden is lovely, with a lush shady lawn, flowers, and a banana tree overhanging a little pool. From the back gate of the garden it is literally just a few steps to the beach through a low concrete tunnel under the road. The only downside was the service - or rather, lack thereof. There is no one at the front desk most of the time, just a bell to push, which may or may not fetch someone from the owner’s quarters upstairs. When we went to check out at 8:30AM the only staff member in evidence was an older gentleman who seemed to be the hotel’s jack-of-all-trades - we’d seen him watering the lawn, serving breakfast, etc. However, he couldn’t check us out and told us we’d have to wait until the desk clerk arrived at 9 (he finally arrived at nearly 9:30). Good thing we didn’t have an early plane to catch! All in all, we wish we’d arranged to spend more of our trip here and less elsewhere.

Traveler's tip on dining

I can recommend the Scirocco restaurant, three minutes walk from Villa Mediterranea. Good local specialties and excellent pizza. Even the very simple spaghetti al pomodoro fresco (spaghetti with fresh tomato sauce) was outstanding!
