I took a 2.5 hours sightseeing bus tour and I asked the driver how to get to the hotel without his help, I would have problems. I took public train, wonderful stranger helped me getting closer to the hotel because public transportation can be confusing and without him it would have taken me much longer. You have to get off on OSTBAHNHOF station. When I got off the train most people did not know the street and when I had to go but I met women that directed me and it is about 15-20 min walk. It is a hostel as well as a hotel. It does not look like much outside or inside but the rooms in the hotel area are very nice and clean, room was perfect- it had a small tv, no radio, no phone but you can rent a clock for 5 Euro if you need to walk up early. Breakfast was included and it was delicious but you cant take any food with you. I would stay there again in the future.

Bedbugs!! Awesome!

You better take my advise if you don’t want to have bugbites. Location is perfect and near Berlin’s fun, but at least for me, the cleanliness of the room is a must for the price paid.

A little walking saves a lot of money

This hotel is about equidistant from Heinrich Heine Unterbahn and the Ostbahnhof S-Bahn stations, about 1/4 to 1/3 mile. After an active day of walking in Berlin, the small amount of noise mentioned in other reviews from partiers is not enough to keep you awake. The bathroom is very small, but clean and everything worked. No A/C on a hot day can be a challenge for us Americans, but the German windows are neat and they work just fine. The breakfast is simple but generous, with salad, yogurt, lunchmeat and cheese, and several types of breads, as well as apple juice and orange juice and coffee. East Berlin has now recovered enough that it looks as good as or better than many sections of American cities, and I felt safer. One elevator is inconvenient when you have an 8th floor room like we did, but we’re healthy, and the 50% of times it looked like a wait, we just took the stairs. I would definitely consider returning to this hotel.

Buy the Berlin welcome card as soon as you arrive in the Hauptbahnhof. It allow unlimited travel on all mass Transportation for 3 days in Berlin and Potsdam for 25 Euros.

Only stay here if you have to save money. Just ignore the drunks passed out in the stairwell.

Stay here if you have to save money. I had to inform the front desk about the drunks passed out in the stairwell. Was disappointed when their response was "yes we know about that". One hour later the drunks were gone but two smashed bottles were in their place. An OK place to stay but I have to believe with more advance time I could have found a much better place for same price.

Not impressed

hotel is clean,but rooms are very cold(nothing for winter).Metro station isnt far away about 10 min,but hotel is in very bed neighberhood.People were friendly but not very helpful.my room were on the very last floor,but the elevator went only to the 7th floor,with suitcases not easy.

excellent budget hotel

excellent budget hotel..no frills but for the price it is worth it! also the staff was so helpful and knowledgeable they really were amazing!

Great Bargain - Exceptional Staff - Very Good Location

The A&O is a Hostel/Hotel so it is on the minimalist end of the hotel spectrum....but this is exactly what I wanted and could afford. It exceeded my expectations in every way. I traveled alone but wanted a real room with bathroom by myself and this was perfect for me. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful....and the included breakfast was truly wonderful. The amount and array of food held me through the entire day at times. It was like they expected everyone to make sandwiches...as much as anyone wanted. Plus being around the other travelers/borders every morning was a cultural experience worth noting itself. I know this would not please the hyper-critical or those who usually spend most of their time in their room....but for the rest of us, I can’t recommend the A&O highly enough. I will stay there again.

The A&O breakfast allows you to make sandwiches for the rest of the day. Also it is only a few blocks from an U-Bahn stop on Berlin’s EXCELLENT public transportation system. And for those, like myself, who are into walking, a main congregation of museums is well within walking distance.

Central near bus tour visiting the city of Berlin

Confortable, clean, room spacious enough and a marvellous breakfeast including in a reasonable price for 2 persons.

Not impressed

The rooms whilst clean were VERY small & in the hotter weather sweat boxes. There in NO air conditioning ANYWHERE in the Hotel nor are there any fans & when because of the heat & humidity you have to sleep with window open, it gets very noisy due to it being on a main road, ie approx 1 car per second. The Staff are relativly helpful & pleasant. Would ONLY recomend it if you’re on a VERY TIGHT budget.

More like a hostel

When booking, I realized that this place doubles as a hostel (it’s full name is A&O Hotel and Hostel), but I did not realize how small the difference between the "hotel" and "hostel" is. Essentially, booking the hotel guarantees a single room and you gives you a separate room for breakfast. And it’s more expensive. I stayed in various other German hotels for the same price which had far superior rooms and service, and better location.
