Would go back tomorrow! Extraorinarily BEAUTIFUL!! WOrth the money!

Amazing location, right on the lake. WE took our children to Lucern for 2 nights and all stayed in an ENORMOUS room overlooking the lake with the mountains just behind. We traveled all around Europe and this was the nicest hotel and location. THe hotel was beautiful, location perfect and the staff was friendly and extremely helpful. BEST HOTEL!!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

We did a trip which included a boat ride, train up MT Pilatus and gondola ride back and it was the highlight of our children’s traveling experience (better than sights in Rome or the Eiffel Tower!). Make sure to bring fleece jackets for the trip though, even in summer!!

Perfect Place by the Lake!!

We had 2 rooms (travelling with our 3 young children) right next to each other facing the lake. Unbelievably BEAUTIFUL!!! Rooms were extremely large for European standards and very comfortable. The city itself is beautiful and extremely relaxing. We felt perfectly safe there with our children. Hotel is older, but well kept. Wonderful location - all of the sights are within walking distance. The in-house Thai restaurant (can’t remember the name) is Fabulous!! Will DEFINITELY return to this hotel!!

The Transportation Museum is GREAT!! Very large with a LOT of hands-on learning activities for people of ALL ages. The walkway along the lake is very safe and serene. The children really got a kick out of feeding the ducks and swans!!

Lovely Lucerne Experience

A very friendly and helpful staff greeted us upon arrival. The lake front room was very large, impressively decorated and regal feeling. We used the swimming pool and enjoyed the outside dining. Breakfast was elegant. Views of lake, mountains, boats, stollers were fantastic. The hotel made a stay in lovely Lucerne a real memory. We felt like royalty.

Wonderful hotel and city

The hotel staff was extremely helpful and friendly. The room was very comfortable and clean. We would have liked a coffee maker in the room. And easy chairs would have been appreciated. The location and views were wonderful. The hotel added to a wonderful trip to Lucerne.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The golden pass for Mt Pilatus was great! It combined a boat trip on Lake Lucerne, cog rail up the mountain, cable car back down the other side and a bus ride back into Lucerne. Beautiful.

Excellent Views

The hotel was in a great location and our rooms had tremendous lake views with balconies. The service was good, bathrooms amazing. The mattress in one room was terrible (too soft) and the breakfast was outrageously expensive for not great food.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The transportation museum was fantastic. The trip up Mount Riggi (by boat and train) was unbelievable - a must do.

Love this hotel!

My husband and I really enjoyed this hotel and can’t wait to go back! The staff were extremely friendly, spoke excellent English, and were willing to help us out with anything. The hotel is very nice. Our room was well decorated, clean, had beautiful bathroom, had a mini-fridge, safe, and tv with multiple channels in English. We were welcomed with a bottle of water and a plate of fruit. Room service was very good and timely. The hotel is located on Lake Lucerne and it has wonderful views of the mountains and it’s just a short walk to all the sites of Lucerne. Also it’s probably about a 10 minute walk from the train station.

Traveler's tip

Stores close early in Lucerne and there is not much opened on Sundays. For good, quick, and reasonably priced meals, go to the Coop and/or Migros grocery stores (located by Chapel Bridge). Also, there’s a great kabob resturant right by the hotel. Take the bus out to Mt. Pilatus and take the gondola all the way up the mountain. It’s well worth it!

Way over priced

The view of the lake and mountains from our room was beautiful. Stone floors are nice, but noisy. The walls were thin and the bed sagged like a cheap motel. We asked to be moved to a different room, and were offered a lesser quality room for the same price. So we instead put the mattress on the floor the next night, and that was better.

Excellent hotel!!

The hotel is excellent! Large room, excellent fittings, nice bathroom, very nice staff, and great location, right on the lake and 5-8 minutes walk to the rail station. Would stay there again! I met some locals and they said it is the best in town.

Grand doesn’t even begin to describe this hotel.

The hotel was just beautiful and the location perfect, close enough to the action yet peaceful and park like. Old world elegance on the lake. The staff were accomidating and made you feel like a welcome guest in their elegant home. Rooms were on the small side but very comfortable, there was a fruit basket there upon our arrival and a fresh flower. The bathrooms were beautiful!Do not miss the pool and spa area,I could have spent the afternoon there without a problem.

Traveler's tip on dining

I enjoyed their breakfast buffet. It was not included but well worth the price. The diningroom is very elegant and the view outstanding.

A Must!!

A 10 minute walk from the train station in a very central location. Staff was very friendly, room was just beautiful!! Complementary snack plate upon arrival in the room, very comfy bed, just lovely.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Mt.Pilatus was out of this world. It was a cloudy day in Lucerne and the lift takes you above the clouds into pure sunshine. Very reasonable and left us completely speechless.

Lovely hotel, but bad plumbing!

My husband and I stayed at the Grand National for two nights on a weekend. The hotel is very nice and our room was lovely. The problem was that we were awakened both nights between 2:00 and 3:00 a.m. by very loud plumbing noises (rushing water and squaling pipes). I cannot explain what caused the noise, but it was terrible and lasted for at least an hour. The hotel was completely sold out so we could not move to a different room, but I am not sure if that would have helped. The hotel was very nice in every other way, but getting a good night’s sleep is important to me so I cannot recommend this hotel.

Beautiful setting

Hotel is close to town. Easy to walk to shopping, dinner and sights. The rooms are very nice with beautiful views of the lake.

Just remember that there is no such thing as "non-smoking"-people smoke in the elevator, halls, etc...the rooms did not smell, however. You can walk (about 5-10minutes) from the train station to the hotel...cabs will not take more that 4 people. We had 5 so we walked. The hotel is just over the bridge and along the lake walk. do the golden pass-start early because you will want to stay all day-stop at the ropes course/alpine slide- it is a blast!

One of Luzern’s best hotel options...top three resort hotel! 5 Star!

This is a classic 5 Star Swiss Resort Hotel (one of the grand dames of Switz) on the shore of Lake Luzern. It is centrally, located so walking to all major points of interest is very convenient. Great views from your balcony if you have a lake shore room. Luzern is Switz’s largest tourist destination, and this hotel makes it all that much more enjoyable.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

One of the most popular tours is a visit up Mt Pilatus (7,000’). Take the turn of the century steam driven paddle wheeler to the base of the mountain, the cog railway to the top, have a nice lunch in either of two locations (the old hotel is nicer), and then take the telefarique and telecabin (cable cars) down the other side and the bus back to the train station at city center.

Great Hotel!

A luxury hotel right on Lake Lucerne. The staff is helpful and very pleasant. The rooms are nice, the bedding and the hotel is a bit quirky. Overall a great spot!

Traveler's tip on dining

Get the lamb filets at the Old Swiss House restaurant! The full day pass to Mount Pilatus worth it, available at the front desk.

Worth its 5 stars

Excellent location, great view from the lake side (city side looks out onto a boring set of buildings so if you can afford to stay here you can afford to get a lake view room), helpful, friendly staff. Parking however is across the street in a commercial lot. But the bellhop will go get your bags for you. Parking is extra at 35 CHF per night. Location is very close to the old town with its lovely decorated buildings, and, fortunately, very few chain fashion stores. It was very pleasant not see a Benetton, Gap, Vuiton, etc. But be prepared to be inundated by stores selling watches. They are everywhere. Definitely recommend the Grand National. See below for saving a few bucks. Our rental car had charges for winter tires, a mysterious "service charge" that turned out to be a charge for writing the contract and various other charges that made up over a third of the rental price. Meals are expensive, but wine is grossly over-priced in all restaurants from the cheapest to the most expensive. In a very ordinary (but nice) place we had a half litre of house plonk that cost almost $20. At another restaurant (nice but far from the classiest in Zurich) where over half the wines cost over $100 per bottle and 23 (I counted) cost over $400 a bottle. So if you are from Canada or the US either be rich or be prepared to take out a second mortgage.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

The heading says Saving a few bucks, but you’re not going to do that in Switzerland very often. Remember - you get charged for EVERYTHING!
