Not bad at all, but has issues
Pros: The room was pretty nice and very clean. Comfortable bed. Refrigerator. A desk and lamp, in-room internet (no extra fee), good lighting, a large TV in a nice entertainment center with drawers. The room has a decent sized closet with ironing equipment and a safe inside. The bathroom is well apportioned with some antique fixtures and a coffee service on the counter. My room came with an abundance of towels. The staff is friendly and operate the front desk 24hrs a day. Cons: They list room service but its only for a few hours a day; early morning or 5:00pm - 9:00pm. Location: Its downtown and not in close walking distance to any convenience stores or fastfood. There are some about a quarter mile away but its definitely not an area youll want to walk around after sundown. Internet went out sporadically the first few days then out completely for 5 days in a row. I could access the equipment and see that someone kept changing the settings and then installing/removing items. Finally the hardline stopped completely and wireless appeared w/o notice but you could only connect after messing around with refreshing some switch settings-- something no-one should be able to get to. I offered to fix it but was simply told (repeatedly) it was going to be fixed momentarily (over 5 days). A single person could have installed and gone live to the entire hotel in a single day, but not them. I only make an issue of the internet because it was the single reason that place was chosen.

Good Value Hotel
With the surrounding hotels in the downtown area, this was a good value compared to my other friends who paid more than I did and from what I hear the quality of their stay was as good as mine. Its a great 2-3 star hotel. I didnt expect more than that. The complaints about the hotel are minor. However, the hotel staff was great!

not for everyone
Billed as a grand hotel from the past, one must remember that the granduer of 1922 might not appeal to everyone. While I appreciate this older style, many people might be more interested in the larger rooms common to modern hotels. Aside from the lobby and main staircase, there is little to distinguish this as a fine hotel with its roots in the 1920s. To the credit of the staff, when I had a maintenance problem with my room, they moved me to a far more expensive suite for the remainder of my stay. All in all, I think I was far better off than the people staying in the crowded hotels near the convention center.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The webistes have not caught up with the new museum built acrosse from Central High School, the scene of the desegregation controversy in 1957. A new museum was recently erected which delivers a powerful message about civil rights, states vs. federal rights, and the use of national guard by the Governor and U.S. Army Airborne troops sendt by Eisenhower to enforce a Supreme Court order. Dont miss it!
