A great basis for the Amalfi Coast
Great scenic setting way up the cliffs with good 10 minute bus connections to/from Amalfi either by hotel van or more frequent local bus service (1E each way). From Amalfi bus/water service to all points worth seeing. Hotel is an older establishment but comfortable and well maintained, and food is good but offerings limited. Hotel away from bustle of tourists, Amalfi night life is limited (which is fine with us) but if you want night life, stay in Sorento which we found too big. We were a 25 person AHI tour (highly recommend) group based at Excelsior and covered the entire coast and islands in 7 days.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Be sure to see Herculaneum which we found much more interesting a site to visit than Pompeii and not as over run with tourist hordes.

The view from the room is the best in the world.
Simply excellent for a leisurely stay and a base from which to see the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento, Pompeii. The hotel staff is terrific. The food is excellent, and dinners are highly recommended. The hotel shuttle is invalable, as I would not dare drive. The walls are a little thin, and next time we will try to stay a little further away from others. I could not recommend it higher otherwise, though.

Too far from town of Amalfi
We thought we were staying in the town of Amalfi, but the hotel was up the cliffs in Pogerola. We had to ride in the hotel car down into town, but the driver left over the weekend, so we had to pay for the city bus to take us into town. The views were gorgeous if you dont mind being away from everything.
Traveler's tip on dining
Find a restaurant that serves spaghetti with a creamy lemon sauce. It is to die for!!!
