Great place to stay when visiting Guangzhou

It’s just around the corner from the Pearl River where you can take walks, watch the chinese play tennis and badminton, have dinner and watch the flashy boats. Hotel service is excellent and the breakfast is very western. Seems close to places in the city. Price is very reasonable. Hotel is listed as 2 star in some guidebooks, but it is clearly a 4 star.

Traveler's tip for business travelers

Pack a sandwich from Hong Kong - hehe.

Great! Quiet Location, Excellent Architecture, Easy Access

The Guangdong Victory Hotel is in a 19th century building, updated for the 21st century traveller. Not the M*rriott but all the comforts of home. The staff are attentive and speak English. Knowledgeable about local attractions and shopping and will help you get anywhere in GZ. A great deal for a great price. The hotel is located on an island in the Pearl River but within short taxi or Metro ride from shopping and other restaurants. Shamian Island is particularly picturesque and virtually traffic free, good walking areas and parks with many families in evidence. Restaurants and a few shops but mostly tranquility in a major metropolis. Go, stay, rest, explore, enjoy. A great base, a great deal. Will stay again next time I am in Gz.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Take the Metro and save time and money over taxis.

Comfort and good location

Simple apartment but spacious and comfortable. Located in a not luxurious neighborhood, but downtown and 2 blocks from the subway that takes you anywhere

It’s an Oasis

Arrived at 10:30 am. Room was not ready because check in time is at 2:00. Assistant manager apologized profusely, sat with us and talked, made us feel totally welcome. Stayed in newer west section. Everything was to the highest standard. Friendly, attentive staff. Wonderful breakfast. The area has a great Zen quality of peace and tranquillity. Wish I were back at this hotel right now...

Great location

This hotel is located in Shamian island, a historical site of GZ. This location is great, there is an excellent Italian restaurant just 5 minute walk, called La Dolce Vita. Hotel itself is old but good, very big room, I staied in the West Building, which is older than the Main Building. Good cost/benefit. Breakfast was very good too.

Nice hotel, would not recommend the city

The hotel is in a quiet enclave near the Pearl River. The neighborhood architecture is colonial, many couples were having their wedding photos taken the afternoon I went out walking. There’s a nice spa next door to the hotel, massages reduced in price if you pay for a spa.

Traveler's tip

Parts of Guangzhou are OK if you walk along the Pearl River and explore a block or two in, but the rest of the city is dirty and run down looking. The Chinese people are extremely friendly however, as usual.

Nice Place

Shamian Island is a relaxing and interesting location for a hotel so the hotel surrounds were attractive. The staff try very hard and provide attentive service. The gym is not great, and we didn’t try the hotel restaurants.

Nice places for kids to play on Shamian Island (hotel surrounds).

Quiet ,Restful and Well located

We stayed in the West Building and recommend it. It isn’t as large as the East Building, but is quiet and our room overlooked the park. Very nice. Furniture is a little dated but the bed was comfortable and it was quiet. The East Building is just off a busy street, and is most likely noisier. particularly if you are on the front side of the building.

extended 3 times, would always return to here

Had planned on moving to different areas in Guangzhou. Was so satisfied here at the hotel stayed 12 days here. Very quiet area but close to almost everything. Great shopping and much cleaner air than a lot of guangzhou. Great food nearby and in the hotel. Every place we went people were great and a lot of them spoke English, much different than in Beijing, hired a translator from one of the restaurants at a very reasonable price. Only used her on occassion.

Traveler's tip on dining

Small restaurant 2 blocks away named Lucys, not necessarily great food but many items including even a hamburger. Many fine dining restaurants in near location.

elegant, reasonable comfort

I spent three nights in Victory Hotel, after a previous stay a few months earlier. Highly recommended: rooms are large, comfortable, well appointed and quiet, overloking treetops on an island with virtually no traffic, but close to the subway and center of town. Just make sure you stay in the West wing, which costs only slightly more than the more modern, conventional and noisy east wing. We had a business room, with free computer and a small sitting room. Breakfast was OK but a bit expensive for what you get and involved waiting a long time for an omelette. Other than that, a real civilized oasis.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Make sure you get a room in the older but modernised West building; costs only a few $$ more.

Will definitely stay there again...

Excellent hotel and excellent staff! My experience at the Guangdong Victory Hotel surpassed my expectation, service provided by this hotel exceeded many 5 stars hotels that I’ve stayed in North America. The location is excellent too. Loved every minute of my stay there.

Great value!

This hotel, on low-traffic Shamian Island, was most pleasant. The room was clean, bed was comfortable, everything in the bathroom worked properly. Internet service was at no extra charge. The breakfast buffet was good, with varied offerrings including to-order omlets, and espresso coffee from a machine that grinds the beans when you start it. The staff was helpful, with good English. Very satisfactory!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Be sure to take a walk along Shamian Third Street, (left out the hotel front door, then left after 1 block) to see the many clever bronze statues of the ’Friendship Garden’, continuing south into the park on the Pearl River.

Would visit again

The hotel is a good choice for everyone. Had a businessroom in Victory-West Building which was quiet nice. Everything was ok, Internet was available, also free coffee and tea in the room. Quiet clean and of course very friendly people all over. Breakfast was ok, but not included (separate). For lunch or dinner had no time, bc was on Tour.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Visit several Shopping Malls, also some Temple and of course restaurants. If there are no friends, take a travel-agent. Language can be a problem.

what river view?

I reserved this hotel because they had a view of the Pearl River which my fiance wanted...all I saw was rooftops.when I complained about this the clerk at the front desk said all the rooms had the same view. NOT THE VIEW IN THE HOTEL AD!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

It’s about 2 blocks to the subway, which is excellent but bus service to hotel is not on route.

Stay in Guangdong Victory Hotel (from June 1-June 4)

Overall is good, roomy and clean, with drinkable water. Highly recommended for this 3-1/2 stars hotel. Bed was comfortable. Except one day problably someone fixed something on the ceiling, ended up leave some crumps on the bedsheet. Somehow there was always ordor from the sewerage whenever I used the sink or the bathtub. Such ordor was problably caused by the nearby Pearl River in this season (in June)?

Good clean comfortable base.

Good clean, secure and comfortable base. As usual in China, outside of Shanghai, English language is limited if existent. In this hotel it is sufficient.

Will Stay Again

Nice, clean hotel. 3 and a half stars about right. Bed was comfortable --- go figure! Large room.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Stay in the main building. Annex doesn’t have restaurant. Many adoptive parents in Swan Hotel nearby--- a few here. Located on an island in a historical district. Nice place to take a walk.

An objective assessment

Good overall value and a friendly hotel staff.

Traveler's tip for business travelers

A bit noisy at times, because of the foreign families staying here during the adoption process to obtain Chinese children.
