Nice Hotel - Questionable Area
Hotel was really nice - actually much better than expected. Very clean, well cared for, as nice as any 3+ star hotel in the States. If you are set on staying in San Jose, the Presidente is a very nice option (perhaps the only option near/in downtown).
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
San Jose is quite sketchy and has not aged well to say the least. I felt a little guilty staying in such a nice place when the surrounding area was poverty stricken. Luckily, we only stayed one night. There is NOT a lot to do and you MUST be careful not to wonder too far from the hotel for safety reasons. If I had the trip to do over again I would skip San Jose and head straight to the Arenal Volcano region or one of the coasts.

Nice hotel but not friendly service
Excellent location if you want to be in downtown SJO, very nice rooms, nice breakfast, everything would be great except the service at the front desk which is very un-friendly. Arrived early at 11AM and was told I could not get a room before the official check-in time of 2:00PM. I felt I was looked at with suspicion every time I asked for something and was surprised the employees would make decisions without consulting me, such as taking away my luggage and briefcase while I was checking in or out and accessing my documents. All my bad experiences have been with the front desk. This was my second stay and I had the same impression as the first stay, nice hotel but not friendly service.
