The perfect location and a very reasonable rate

I couldn’t be happier with my stay at Kalvin House. The location was perfect for my stay. Steps from the metro or tram, a block from the Central Marketplace and convenient to all the tourist stops. The hotel staff was very helpful and accommodating. The room was good sized, and simply furnished. The breakfast was fine for starting your day. I will stay at Kalvin House again on my next visit to Budapest.

You cannot beat Autumn for a visit to Budapest.

Great location

I found this to be the ideal location for sightseeing in Budapest. Easy to get around the city and I found the staff to be very helpful. Room is basic but clean - typical of older European hotels, but charming. Breakfast was adequate, but nothing fancy. I usually had a light bite there then stopped for a cappucino and roll outside. Be sure to check out the Market next to the hotel for great baked goods. I’d stay here again.

Very silent and comfortable, nice hotel

I always stay in this house during my trips to Budapest. It is near to everywhere such as metro station, central market, the most popular street "Vaci Utca", Danube river, the bridges,and caffes. The staff of this hotel behaves very kindly to the guests. Rooms are clean. The building is a well organised historical place.

Great place to stay in Budapest

I stayed here a week and thought it was an excellent location to explore Budapest. I loved the great market just down the street - great place for cheap lunch plus grocery store in basement. Good transportation access with nearby Kalvin metro stop and trams. Breakfast had a good selection of cold cuts, breads and cereal. Friendly staff. Be sure to ask for air conditioner remote if it is too hot, no extra charge.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Lunch at the great market hall was a highlight. Cheap stand-up Hungarian fast food on second floor. You can have a sandwich or sausage with a great .5L beer for under $4. Sit down cafeteria had excellent Hungarian meals plus music for under $10.

Nice Place

Generally very nice. Good breakfast. Nice people. Only exceptions: occasionally limited room service and one malfunctioning bathroom fixture. No discernible air control. Otherwise, very nice.

Uncomfortable beds

Uncomfortable beds and pillows. Very noisy in the mornings starting from 5 am. I hated it all.

Good location

We liked the location of the hotel, near the Market Hall and close to public transportation. The room was large and comfortable. We had some issues with little sugar ants (not the biting kind), so make sure you don’t leave any unwrapped food around.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

We did the city bike tour. It was any easy ride (no hills) and our guide was very good. Efficient way to see the highlights of Budapest in a short time. We also recommend the baths, which are a bit confusing to use, but a great way to end a day of sightseeing.

We would stay here again

We were impressed with the friendliness of the staff. The hotel is in an older building, but our room was clean and well maintained. Large also, by European standards. We faced an inner courtyard and were not bothered by street noise. The breakfast was well stocked and replenished often and we appreciated the open access to the internet. Location was close to Central Market and the main pedestrian street. And even though there was a metro stop close by, we walked everywhere. Even found a few restaurants close by that we would eat at again.

Not A Bad Place To Stay

We stayed at this hotel on September 9th, 2007. We arrived by train and took a cab to the hotel (they charged us 6000 Ft but as we later learned from the hotel and on the ride back, you should not pay more than 1500). While it initially did look a little less shiny and clean than the internet pictures, and the reception area was a little cramped, I was very happy with my stay there. We had three people in our room, and there was plenty of room for all of us and our luggage AND there was an antique piano in our room. The bathroom was huge and while it didn’t have an actual shower, it had a huge corner tub with movable spray nozzle. The location was great--we walked everywhere from there--Parliament house, Castle District, and it is right next to the Market and Vaci Utca. There is also a very nice cafe directly next door. The hotel staff was friendly and helpful, and there is a computer in the breakfast area where you can access the internet for free. The only possible downside is that our luggage was not kept in a locked room until our room was ready for check in--it was left in the reception area in a corner. But overall, I was happy with the stay and would stay there again.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

We attended Folklor, which is a show of traditional Hungarian dance. I would highly recommend it to all--the live music is phenomenal and the dancing is impressive and entertaining for all ages. The venue is small so you get very close up. It cost about 13,000 Ft for three people (with mid-tier seating which put us in the third row with noone in front of us) and lasted about one hour and 40 minutes.

Completely overated

This was an awful hotel. The "lobby" is on the second floor. You arrive to a locked front door and have to wait for someone to open it. The reception was poor, the room was not clean. The bed was uncomfortable, the shower did now work. The furniture was not appropriate for the room, the room was too hot. The paint was peeling, and we had to check out after one day and move to the Novatel. Bad hotel, poor service, and by the way, the breakfast was lousy. Bad experience all around. Hard to believe it’s the same hotel other folks are writing about.

we were there in the heat wave and it was not air conditioned. Excellent for it’s stars. great location. friendly personnel.

A Hidden Jewell

When we arrived to the street where the hotel is we were worried because you can hardly tell that there is a hotel in this location but once we got in we discovered a beautifully recycled house with brand new elevator and excellent rooms. A step from the Market and and all Pest attractions. Great location at a reasonable price.

The heart of Budapest is hospitable

Excellent service! My mother and I had made arangements through expedia before leaving the states and had no problems checking in once we arrived. The staff is fantastic. I talked with many of them for recommendations, taxi calls, etc. Each day breakfast provided more than ccould be eaten. Nothing ever ran out.
