A bit nicer than standard...
Considering that Copacabana nowadays isnt the best neighborhood in Rio, the hotel surroundings are actually nice, and youre close to a lot very useful services: restaurant, metro, shops, 3 blocks away from the beach... quite right. The hotel is very clean, breakfast is ok, and theres an ok wifi internet. What didnt I like: customer service - hotel staff not nice at all, aweful english.

Stinky bathroom
Overall, the Astoria, as a hotel, wasnt THAT bad. It certainly wasnt that great either. The room itself was fairly clean when we arrived, albeit old. The service was average, about what you would expect from a cheaper hotel. Our biggest problem was that one off the drains in the bathroom was giving off a really foul smell. We were tired enough the first night, we either didnt really notice or just didnt care. The next day was when it started becoming a problem. We complained to the front desk on several occasions, only to have a houseman come and pour a bunch of overpowering chemicals down it. This didnt fix the problem, only masked it for a few hours. I suppose we should have demanded a new room, but were both the type of people that will simply never go back to a place (restaurant or hotel) as opposed to making a huge deal out of something. Plus we were already unpacked, and werent really planning on spending that much time in the room. If we had it to do over, we should have either made them switch rooms or gone to another hotel. Of course they should have done that in the first place, or better yet, never have put someone in the room.

Great location, staff not very forthcoming
Stayed in the Hotel Astoria Copacabana for six nights in March 2009. Location is great, very close to Copacabana beach. Re overall quality, I would describe the hotel as lower end of mid-range. Room was cleaned daily but sometimes saw ants crawling near the mini-bar. Guy behind reception wasnt terribly helpful; one of those people that pretends hes doing you a favour by just doing his job. As a result of this didnt bother asking reception for any suggestions in terms of nightlife, restaurants etc like I normally would. Breakfast was pretty good.
Traveler's tip on dining
If you exit the hotel and walk to the right, across the road on the corner of the street there is a snackbar where they do excellent and cheap food and drinks; order what other people are having (cant remember the brazilian/portuguese names)
