Rio Central
Arrived early and had to wait until 12:00. We received a free upgrade. Hotel staff was excellent. Food was great and reasonable. Was not a 5 star but I didnt need one. It was a good value and would recommend it.

Moderate choice
This hotel had great views of Sugarloaf and we could even see Cristo Redentor as well. The staff was friendly and very helpful. The room was quite basic but the shower was great. The breakfast was ample as well. The condition of the hotel was older and they were renovating the room next to ours. The air conditioning was great. The location was remote from the beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema--cabs were pricey to those areas. After a day or so we became familiar with the metro and buses. The metro station and local shopping were only one block away. The hotel is near the water and convenient to downtown by metro.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Although the beaches of Rio are famous, the water seemed very unappealing. We live near beaches where the water looks much cleaner, so we avoided it in Rio. We loved the Botanical Garden, the tram to Santa Teresa (get there early in the day), and the historic parts of Rio. Museums were closed on the day we wanted to go (Monday)
