Great choice for visiting Rio
We prefer to experience a foreign culture as close as possible. This hotel was a perfect choice. It is simple but clean and in a busy neighborhood with lots of good restaurants and street cafes that the cariocas like to visit (and that are recommended by "lonely planet") offering original brazilian and other food and beverages. The beach is across the street (albeit not recommended for swimming) but the coolest was the bus stop a minute walk from the hotel. Busses will take you from there anywhere you wish including the international airport. The metro station is a 10 minutes walk away. If we ever visit Rio again, we will sure stay there again.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
Take the bus! We felt perfectly safe, its only 2 reals ($1), and its an adventure in itself!

Good for the price.
This is an old, but well kept hotel in a relatively safe area of Rio. I was waiting for a flight to the U.S. (17 hour holdover) and this hotel was about 50% the cost of the alternatives. The area was quiet, the food was good, and the front desk was quick and courteous. The building was ornate and had lots of hardwood walls, doors, and furnature. I would would stay there again.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The area has lots of residential condominiums, offices, banks, little shops, and some restaurants. It is also about 1/2 block from the beach and beach park with lots of palm trees, grass, and walking areas.
