Safe, clean hotel in new town
We stayed here for two days in July 2009. Front desk staffed with excellent English speaking staff. My Expedia prepayment was accepted without a hitch. Hotel has uniformed doormen and lots of security, including the street in front. Rooms are of adequate size, nicely furnished and clean. Bath was to American standards including lots of hot water. There is an attached restaurant with decent food and an business center with desktops and internet connection, though another internet cafe is across the street. Rooms have a metal safe locked by a separate lock set, free at the front desk. The only concern we had was that we kept one room for an extra night to store luggage until our 11PM flight, and they noticed we now had 3 people in one room (two is evidently the limit) and were banging on the door. A white lie sent them packing, but caused some anxiety.
Traveler's tip on shopping
Lots of good shopping and restaurants within a few blocks walking distance, but much is closed on Sunday..

Location Location Location 3 Star Hotel in Heart of La Mariscal
6 night stay in Quito, cor of Cordero and Amazonas, 3 blocks fr Plaza Foch, easy walking to bars, rest and shops. 6th floor room faced west (Rm 602), incredible view of volcano Pichincha and the city of Quito. From the third morning on, the skies were clear and cloudless, and Pichinche emerged, almost close enough to touch. The hotel: 10 story glass fronted elevator building, 60 or 70 rooms, bar on the top floor (we didnt visit). Check in/check out fast, courteous. Compl. Wifi and coffee and tea in the lobby, & two computers in lounge for guests. rkfst not included, but the buffet is $6.50, sample the local dishes. We ate there, but the nearby Magic Bean, became our place, nice ambience, inexpensive, open all day. Large king room, w minibar, TV w premium channels, incl HBO, Showtime, Cinemax,. Room is comfortable, window wall facing bed, desk and dining table w/2 chairs. The carpet is tired, also the bedspread and linens. The adjacent bath is ok, good water pressure & temp, tub w shower, hair dryer, some amenities. Towels were thin and grayish. Small safe in the closet, ask for free lock and key at reception. Service courteous & efficient.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Quitos alt: 9,200 ft, day temps 70F, nights 50F. If prone to high blood pressure, asthma, migraine more susceptible to alt sickness (soroche). Diamox effective preventative. Rest first 2-3 days, lots of water, no alcohol. Ecuador is v inexpensive: food, clothing (leather jackets!), art, taxis cheap. Currency = US dollar. Carry photocopy of passport photo/info page plus Ecuador entry stamp. Keep passport in safe. Enjoy!

Wonderful food in La Canoa restaurant; very personable. Staff friendly and helpful; computer access.
The hotel staff was helpful, friendly and very professional. The La Canoa restaurant and room service were outstanding and personable. The view from our 9th floor room was awesome and the services were helpful from banking, getting a tour to Calderona and to Mitad del Mundo through a taxi guide, travel and city services as well as daily newspapers. My only disppointment was we wanted a drink at Cafe de Paris our last evening at 9:30 pm and it was closed. Other than that, a wonderful hotel who was helpful and friendly despite the road being repaired outside of the hotel. Thanks for a wonderful stay.

very nice, small hotel, restaurant not worth it
The Rio Amazones is a very nice, small hotel near the main street in Quito. It is on a side street, so it is very quiet. The staff are English-speaking (for the most part) and very helpful. It is right next to a travel agency that arranges Galapagos tours, a good place to make last-minute reservations. The restaurant, though, is nothing to brag about. They say that they are "gourmet", but the service is poor and the food is very average.

Very good bargain.
The hotel is in an excellent location, with public transportation readil available. The staff is accustomed to serving American guests. Very close to an abundance of small, eclectic cafes and coffee houses. The hotel is simply a very good value.
