Its a coin toss
Beautiful setting, rooms are entered after winding through lovely gardens with statues of Hindu Gods. Rooms pretty fancy, nice hand carved furniture, and marble floors, but the beds were too hard. The hotel uses teenage kids from local villages in order to teach them a trade and give them a chance to earn some money. A very humanitarian thing to do but it leads to some amateurish service; not checking the laundry basket for days, until we reminded them to, forgetting to restock the complimentary things like bottled water and coffee, even helping themselves to our chocolates! The resturant was not much better. If you were going to eat there in the evening you had to order two hours in advance. The breakfast was included but the menu was so limited that you could could try everything they have in just two mornings. After that it got so boring that we would pay for breakfast elsewhere.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
They have limited free shuttle service into town 3 times a day and back. An unscheduled trip costs R25,000 each way ($2.50). R50,000 is enough to rent a peppy little scooter for 24 hours, and weekly rates make it even cheaper. Not only a better deal by far but much more freedom to cruise the beautiful countryside.

Depressing and dark
This place was so bad, I booked into another (excellent) resort after 2 nights. The Suly is in the middle of no where - not lovely, rural no where but on the main road from Ubud to Denpasar. Its just not near anything. The place is interesting, in a gothic kind of way. Its very colonial style but the rooms are horrible dark, with little windows and large, oppressive furniture. The most distressing part is that it appears to be staffed exclusively with very young kids, all of whom are trying hard but its uncomfortable. I met up with several other travellers, all of who were also trying to find other accommodation. Avoid this place - its depressing.
