Okay place to go, if you want that quarter
Pros: +Near a good metro line and an easy but long walk to the Louvre etc. +Polite and reasonably helpful staff. +Across from Follies Bergere (if you want it-- see cons below) +Reasonable sized elevator, easy for a person on a cane. +Accross from a grocery store. +Lots of jewish bakeries etc, so I would assume getting kosher food would be easy. +Free internet Cons: -The linens in my room smelled very faintly smoky. - Lots of noise & thin walls. I am told this is common in Paris. -Abysmal view with an arch half in front of the window -- again not uncommon in Paris. - Seemed like a touristy area, perhaps not uncommon. - Bed was lumpy (but not unbearable), and there was a hole in the top blanket. -For a woman traveling alone, or for families, the Follies Bergere may be a minus. FYI, it is an upscale review of scantily clad women Vegas-style. I never felt unsafe, and by day you wouldnt know its there, but perhaps its why the neighborhood was noisy and I did run into a few harmless but drunk men while coming home very late one night. There are also brochures with topless women, but thats a hazard in a lot of places. After accidentally walking around the Rue St. Denis in the day time, I made sure I never went north or east of my hotel again (where you can stumble into seedier neighborhoods). Summary: It served its purpose as a reasonably priced centrally located base-location with private bathroom.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Say /Bonjour Madame or Monsieur/ whenever you go into a store or before asking anything. I look & speak French & lots of tourists rudely interrupted me to ask questions in their native language without so much as a greeting or excuse me. Would you do that at home? Also use the computer ticket kiosks at the metro. There is a wheel so you can scroll to English screens, and it is easier than speaking to a metro worker and holding up the line.
