Driving directions: From the airport, take the new National Road in the direction of Agios Nikolaos. Drive for 15 kilometres and take the exit for Kato Gouves. Follow the road round to the right onto the old National Road and drive past Kato Gouves and the Analipsi resort. After one more kilometre, turn left onto the road running parallel to the main road. Drive for another 800 metres and turn left again. Follow the road until you see the Kosta Mare Palace with the car park on the left hand side.
To explore the island, there is an extensive public bus network connecting the main towns and villages; but to reach the more rugged parts, car hire is recommended.

A large, popular resort, Chersonissos lies 27 kilometres from Heraklion. It offers sand beaches with water sports facilities, and a buzzing nightlife with English-style pubs, cocktail bars and nightclubs. Theres plenty for children too, including go-karts, and a miniature train that runs along the seafront. The Star Beach complex combines a beach, water park and spa. The 18-hole Crete golf club lies seven kilometres inland.
