Zulu Nyala Manor
A great quiet place to unwind and prepare for your safari after a very long, tiring trip from US. It’s just a little far from Johannesburg city center. To be with the animals in the backyard is a prelude to the coming adventures.

Marching to Pretoria?
Once we arrived at Zulu Nyala Country Manor, all was well. The room was comfortable, breakfast very good, and the people couldn’t have been friendlier or more helpful. Finding the place was a nightmare. The directions they provided were virtually useless...but we only realized how bad they were at 1 AM, 40 miles off track, on a toll road with no local currency. Don’t try this on your own! They tell you to take the N1 toward Pretoria, then leave out a few details. When we finally got that sorted out, the street they were on was unmarked. Driving up to a security gate marked "Warning: Armed Response" is not reassuring. Other than that, great place, great value. But apparently no one in South Africa reads after dark. Lighting is inadequate by US standards.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
People we met were amazed that we had rented a car instead of hiring a car and driver. Jo’burg at rush hour looks like LA, complete with smog. The only maps we could find were, to be kind, somewhat lacking in detail. Get a GPS and cell phone with your rental, be aware that some places are less safe than others, especially at night, and plan accordingly.
