Character and value
The American Hotel is an excellent choice if you prefer decent hotels with character rather than the monotony of more modern chain hotels. Its location is excellent, particularly if you want to avoid some of the, shall we say "less reputable" areas of the city. (I was travelling with my 10 y.o. son.) Its a 5 - 10 minute walk from the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gough Museum, even closer to Vondelspark. The shopping district, Flower Market, and a large selection of restaurants (especially if you want Argentinian beef) are also within easy walking distance. The common areas of the hotel are not luxurius, but they are clean and retain the character of a fine old hotel, particularly the dining room. The rooms, although a bit tight (as is typical of a European hotel of this vintage), have been updated to a modern standard. The only real negative was the expensive and painfully slow internet connection.

Good Hotel with Uneven service
Upon arrival at 10 am I was not suprised to learn that our room had not yet been cleaned and could not be given to us. After spending several hours touring the neighborhod and having lunch I checked back several times. By 3 pm my jet lag and patience finally ended. We got our room about 4 pm and suprisingly found dust in it. It had not been fully cleaned or had been sitting empty for sometime. and could have been given to me earlier. I found the hotel staff unsympathetic about their $25/hr interneet fees. This price ended up presenting no problem as I could not get the house internet machines to accept my credit card and never succeeded in using their machines and again recieved a lack of sympathy or help from the staff.. Thankfully other hotels in the area had machines available. A few employees were a bit too busy to be helpful on ocasion. On the plus side I got several good nights sleep and really enjoyed the location. Canal boat or Trams wait for you outside the hotel door and more resteraunts than you can imagine. When I wiegh the good agaionst the bad I think I will go to the Marriot on the nearby corner next time I visit Amsterdam.

Great Hotel
Among the great qualities of this hotel is its location. Its in Leidesplein, close to the center of the city. Its on the canal system so getting a canal boat is steps away as is the public transport. The Rijksmuseum is a 5 minute walk. Vondelpark is next door to the museum. The rates were very low because of the recession so the value to us was even greater. The only hitch was a very long wait for our room to get cleaned for check-in but we left our bags with the concierge and explored the city. Highly recommended. For a great dinner, you cannot beat Peppinos nearby (and its proprietor Marcello).

Great place, nice staff.
We had a lovely stay at the Eden in late Aug. The first wonderful feature was that , when we arrived at 8:30 in the morning from the airport, an angel named Nicky let us have our room. That saved our first day. We napped and were ready to enjoy our visit. I know it is dependant on availaility, ut she was still very kind and eager to help us. We reserved and paid extra for a balcony room. It was lovely and exactly what we anticipated/. Pay the $$ and have a lovely room and alcony.

Great Location
The hotel is in a great location right on the canal and next to a tram stop. Everything in the city is in walking distance. Requested a canal room and that is what we got. Large room compared to European standards.

I was very happy with my stay that Eden Amsterdam American Hotel. The hotel is located near Vondelpark, and many great restaurants. I really enjoyed my stay at this hotel.

Mikes bike tours are very close to this hotel. The tour was very well organized and a perfect way to experience Amsterdam.

Just loved it!
The staff was excellent! They locked our luggage up so we could start visiting the city after our early am arrival. They also locked up one of our bags when we left for a wedding in Copenhagen and returned several days later. The location is fantastic, a tram stop is right there. The tram takes you directly to Central Station. There are many places to eat, a canal boat tour stop is right across the street, and they offer a discounted price to guests. The staff printed up the train schedule when we wanted to visit Delft the next day and were very nice and helpful. The room was spacious, the shower nice and they even had washcloths- a rarity in Europe! We walked to the Rijksmuseum and the Van Gogh Museum from the hotel, there is also a nice park with the "I Amsterdam" statue close by. We will definitely stay there again!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
On the bridge across from the hotel, there is a tourist kiosk. Go there and pre-purchase tickets for the Anne Frank House. The price is the same, but you can skip the queue which can be over an hour long. You can purchase tickets for many museums (one includes entry to several fine museums) and tours at the kiosk.

Great Location and helpful staff
Great location in close proximity to restaurants, canal tour, museums and shopping. We had requested early check-in and our room was ready at 0930 when we got to the hotel! Had really not expected this, so a grand surprise. Very helpful staff. Rooms are nice although small with the king size bed.

Great choice
We spent 4 nights at the Eden Amsterdam American in July and were quite pleased with our selection. The hotel faces a lovely section of the canal with a park on the opposite side. It was very conveniently located with a tram stop in the same block, an easy walk to shopping, restaurants, and most of big sightseeing attractions. The hotel staff were very friendly and helpful. The rooms were a bit small by U.S. standards, but otherwise comparable in quality and decor and fine for 2 people since we didnt spend that much time in our room anyway. Bed was very comfy. Our only complaint was that internet access was very expensive, but that seemed to be the case in all of the hotels we checked.
Traveler's tip on dining
For fine dining canalside thats not fussy or touristy and walking distance from the hotel, we highly recommend Pastini at Leidsegracht 29 (Italian, but not pizza/pasta); Zuid Zeeland on Herengracht, 1 block west of Liedsestraat (french), and Sahid Jaya on Reguliersdwarsstraat (Thai). All 3 have a lovely atmosphere and great food and service. The owner at Pastini suggested the others so we tried and couldnt decide which of the 3 we liked the best!

beautiful hotel
Was given a room on the 4th floor overlooking the canal, with a stone balcony and room to sit outside. Even though it rained a good deal when there in July it was a thouroughly enjoyable stay in this classy hotel, which is maintained in sort of a 1940s art deco motif. Quality service from everyone and fast check in.
Traveler's tip on recreational activities
Rent a bike and ride thru nearby Vondel park. The nearby Pancake Corner on the Leidseplein is also one of the best sports bars in Amsterdam.

The dining hall is a marvelous space but the price for the breakfast is ridiculous. The room was very comfortable but a bit cramped. Staff was friendly.

Our stay at the Eden American Amsterdam
When we arrived at the hotel, we were quickly greeted and checked in. The lobby area is very nice. Our room was very spacious and clean and the bathroom had everything I needed for a pleasant stay. Great thing about the hotel is tha it is right smack near Leidesplein Square - lots of nightly entertain and close to many restaurants. The hotel is also walking distance to the museums - Van Gogh. You can even take the bus right from the Airport straight to Leidesplein Square and cross the street to the hotel. It was great and we would definitely stay there again on our next trip.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Leidesplein Square is right across the street, many shops and restaurants literally walking distance from the hotel. You can also walk straight up the street towards Spui and end up at Dam Square, Red Light District without a problem. Definately do Mikes Bike Tours - we did 2: the city and Country bike tours and Peter was great!!!

You get what you pay for in Amsterdam
Stayed there for 4 days near 4th of July weekend for business. Hotel rooms are dirty, especially the carpets. The Leidsplein(sp?) area is so full of tourists and it may be the worst place in the city to stay to get a good feel of what Amsterdam is really about. Dirty, busy, 99% of eateries in the area are for tourists and they dont care if you come back...
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Stay in quieter areas of the city center. Dont stay in Dam Square either. Walk Walk Walk, you will see the real beauty of the city. Look for where the locals eat.

Happy stay in Amsterdam
My husband and I recently stayed in this hotel for a week and we had a great time indeed. First and foremost the location is perfect, close to two of the most important museums (Rijks and Van Gogh), the Heineken experience, a lot of restaurants, cafes and bars, and a very busy street with lots of stores of all types and nice restaurants and cafes. We are the walking freak types, so we covered a lot of attractions from our hotel on foot, but if you cannot afford the walking, the trams stop meters away from the hotel. Every day we had breakfast at a different place, but we tried the hotels American Cafe food, which was very good, though more expensive than most restaurants around the area. Check the weather before you go, so you can plan your packing, we got 7 days of beautiful blue skies and perfect, cool temperatures, but the week after our stay it started raining all day long!
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
We rented a car and spent the day at Dusseldorf, Germany. If you have the time and the energy, it is a nice way to get to know another city.

We really enjoyed the Hotel. Well be back!
Located in a very convenient touristic place, it is very near to Rijks Museum and Heineken Experience. Very well served by the trams and close to a number of places to eat. Crew very attentious and courteus. Decent room and additional facilities. We strongly recommend.
Traveler's tip on nightlife
Go to Rijks Museum, Van Gogh Museum, Heineken, Take the boat and have a ride in the canals, finishing the day strolling in the Red Light District (it is safe). Take a excursion to Brussels and Antwerp (here the cathedral is a must). The Sex Museum and Erothic Museum are not funny or interesting.
