Doctors cave beach hotel

This hotel is quiet, staff have respect. Across the hotel is the beach, various clubs & restaurants. There are shops, pharmacy at walking distance. My wife & I had very good time

Traveler's tip on dining

Main tips are the beaches & dinning, There are various good foods (all continents) around & beaches are very close

Not great, not bad

Nice hotel, VERY basic room. Across the street from a beautiful beach, but watch out while wandering around. You WILL be accosted (in a mostly friendly, but pushy manner) to purchase "goods" or "services" by several people within 10 feet of the hotel entrance. One guy even purported to work for the hotel as the gardener (yeah, and I’m the head chef) and proceeded to offer services I’m sure are outside the scope of normal hotel perks.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Cheap-ish place to stay, nice hotel, basic room. Very friendly and helpful staff. Would stay again if I needed a cheap room for a night or 2, but certainly not for an extended stay.

great modest hotel near a beautiful beach

Doctors Cave Beach Hotel is a great hotel for those on a budget. The staff is super friendly, the hotel is modest yet comfortable, and it’s a 3 minute walk to beautiful doctors cave beach. The hotel is right on Montego Bays hip strip and is right down the street from Margaritaville which is quite "happening" every night (for those of you that like a good party).

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Don’t bother exchanging currency. All shops and restaurants accept American currency.

Nice hotel

The hotel staff are overall friendly and helpful and the folks in the restaurant bent over backwards for my kids. My only major disappointment was with one lady at the front desk. I was in JA for a family obligation and a family member stopped by for 2 hours because we were leaving together at 2am for a trip to the embassy in Kingston. This woman charged me $33 dollars for this visit. I was disappointed because my husband’s cousin stayed at the same hotel a couple of months ago and had non-stop friends and family visit and stay with her with no problems. I talked to her a couple of times explaining that it was just a quick visit, but she wouldn’t bend. Overall the hotel is good but this was a tight trip for me financially and even though $33 isn’t much, it took away from what I was able to give other staff members for their excellent service.

Traveler's tip on dining

Really tough finding food for two finicky young Americans (ages 3 & 5) but there is a diner up diagonally across from Margaritaville and next to Burger King(I forget the name already) that was perfect for the kids - they gave them toys and had a great fish tank the kids loved.

Be careful what you wish for...

Requested King size bed, got 2 twins next to each other and nailed to the wall. The rooms were very clean, private patio, super friendly staff. Great location, close to beach and good restaurants. Also, said breakfast and beach fare included, neither were. Saw rooms with refrigerators, would have been nice to have one.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Just say no! Found it was the best way to get a deal from the very, very pushy locals. Negotiate prices first, especially with taxis.

Would Stay Again!

Overall hotel stay was enjoyable. Aside from having to call the Front Desk every day for room towels & etc. (room service never replaced room towels at the same time they removed them---had to call every day for them to be brough up to room)---our room was clean, comfortable, and cozy. Hotel staff was nice & friendly. And hotel food was fairly good. Would definitely stay again and recommend hotel to others.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Doctor’s Cave a quaint, comfy, cozy, & colorful place to stay on a moderate budget that is located right on Mobay’s Hip Strip, Gloucestershire Avenue. Doctor’s Cave is centrally located to Doctor’s Cave beach, shops, places to eat, and nightlife (Margaritaville). Nice place to visit.

A wonderful escape!

If you want a hotel that is truly Jamaican and that is charming, peaceful, and clean, Doctors Cave Beach Hotel is perfect. The staff was respectful, kind, and very accommodating.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Exchange US dollars for Jamaican currency and banks. Doctors Cave does not have all the amenities of a resort, and that is the charm of it. Travel in taxis recommended by the hotel staff and ask the driver to drive slowly so you can see Jamaica.

Comfortable, if past it prime

Good food in restaurant and incredibly friendly staff. Our room had a terrace with garden view in the older part of the hotel. In the evenings, a group of very loud tree frogs made their presence known. It is tropical. There are many places to stay in Mobay but this hotel will allow you to interact with locals, especially if you are willing to walk a couple miles a day. There is also a small craft market in the lobby on saturday so you could avoid the other markets as they all have the same stuff.

Traveler's tip on shopping

Visit the Museum of West Indian Art before buying any thing at a craft market. All prices are marked in US dollars, the staff knows about the art, and there is a large selection of art from Jamaica, Haiti and Cuba. You must take a taxi though.

Doctors Cave

Name is pretty apt at room description. Was like a cave. And the pool was either closed or too filthy to swin in.

Adequate

Employees very friendly and helpful. The hotel & rooms clean if somewhat dated. The only other thing I would say is that the hotel menu is limited and the two (2) meals I had were average at best.

great hotel with the right expectations

Ok, this isnt a 5 star hotel, and you arent paying a 5 star price, so dont expect that. For what it is, DCBH is great. The best part about the hotel is the location and the staff. All of the staff were extremely helpful, and knew us all by name. The rooms could have been nicer, and the bathroom was a bit run down, but it was good enough for the price. The room is spacious and we even had our own little balcony, so that was cool.

Caribbean Oasis

Doctor’s Cave is situated in the "Hip Strip" on Glouchester Ave. in Montego Bay. The hotel offers a nice respite from some of the craziness out on the street - with a great bar and decent restaurant. The bartneder, Kenny, has been there for many years and is a font of wisdom on what to do and what to avoid in Montego Bay. Nice hotel, with good management.

A great value in Montego Bay

I found the hotel to be clean, the staff friendly and service oriented and it is in a great location, close to everything. Overall a good value.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

The Grouvey Grouper is located on Doctors Cave Beach and it’s a great spot to watch the sunset or for seafood lovers, they have a seafood buffet on Fridays which is worth visiting.

Old Jamaica

If you are looking for the glitz of an all inclusive this hotel is not for you. But, if you want to experience a Jamaican hotel the way they use to be, this is for you. The room was clean, the private patio was delightful and the decor of the hotel was amazing. The staff was very helpful and friendly. The bar tender made a great rum punch and the restaurant was good with reasonalbe prices.

Not staying here next time!

In terms of the looks of the hotel , it was ok. First our room wasn’t ready when we arrived. There excuse was we need to turn on the a/c to allow the room to cool before we enter. That turned into a 45 minute task. Then, the bed was so hard, I felt like I was sleeping on bricks. I woke up sore every morning. If I want to get really picky the room was not that clean. There was dust in the closet and the bathroom was not that clean. Also, the sheets had cigerette burns. The towels in the bathroom were not of the best quality and they were damp, maybe the from the extreme humidity. The gym had equipment from 1970 and it was dirty. The hot tub I refused to enter, it just didn’t look sanitary. Some of the cheaper hotels looked nicer that Doctors Cave. I recommend going elsewhere.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Do not eat on the strip. If you go downtown you can get food at half the price and it taste better.

Mixed Vacation Review

We arrived at night and the area actually scared us. Our room was just OK - only a little soap, no other amenities. Bed was comfortable enough and the water was hot. We were right at the Hip Strip which consisted of a lot of trinket shops and undesirable vendors. Did not go out far at night. The hotel was probably really, really nice 20 years ago. The restaurant was OK - one night I wanted just dessert and there was none and no soup even though they were advertised. However, the grounds were very beautiful and you feel like you are in the "real" Jamaica instead of one of many at one of the big all-inclusives. Doctor’s Cave Beach was beautiful and was across the street. You paid $5.00 to get in and then more for a chair and umbrella. All in all, we probably would not stay at this hotel again.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Would recommend the beach across the street. The Jamaican Bobsled Restaurant down the street from the hotel was great.

Perfectly adequate

We stayed there for one night after a vacation in an all-inclusive in Negril since the hotel was to the airport and we had an early morning departure. There was a comfortable lounge area to read and relax in, and the hotel restaurant was pretty good. I don’t think I’d want to stay there for an extended period of time, but it was perfect for our needs.
