Worth an overnight stop
Step through the doors of El Rancho Hotel, and you step back in time to the 1930s and 40s. The lobby is very impressive and atmospheric. The staff were friendly and service good in the restaurant - excellent huevos rancheros for breakfast with a fiery red chili or milder green chili sauce. My room in the main hotel (there’s also a motel attached) was spacious and confortable. The decor and furnishings were dated, but that somehow added to the charm of the place. I would definitely go back.
Traveler's tip on shopping
The hotel had a long-established "Indian Crafts" store with good quality jewelery, pottery and Navajo rugs. A good place to buy authentic, hand-loomed Navajo rugs of very high quality. Not cheap but a lot cheaper that big city tourist stores and galleries.

Glad we stayed!
The lobby is worth the stay here! Our room was fine and it was quiet. The only surprise was the size of the bathroom (had to sit sideways on the toilet!). Pricier than other hotels in town, but I’m glad I stayed once.

maybe this is the best gallup has to offer
OK . . . so the photos in the lobby of stars who stayed there (undoubtedly 50 or more years ago!) were fun to see. But I should have left after the trip down star/memory lane and gone to a different hotel where: the air conditioning was ON (it was about 100 degrees outside but inexplicably the a/c in the El Rancho wasn’t ’on’); there was internet (and i mean NO internet at El Rancho -- does anyone even remember how to ’dial up’ any more?!); they’d redecorated within the last half-century (need i say more about El Rancho)? No thanks - not for me. Quoth the Raven, "nevermore!"
