Good enough to stay for my 3 night booking, definitely wont go back.
I was in a bit of a pinch (no internet access, limited phone availability) finding a hotel in Florence, & this one was recommended by someone who had stayed there & they had a room available. At that point, that was all I needed to book it. I was there 3 nights, & it had enough going for it to not bother looking elsewhere, but I wont go back. Pros: Helpful, friendly staff, comfy bed (I like firm beds), linens & towels were clean & changed daily, good wifi internet access in the room. Cons: Filthy, stained carpets in the halls, holes in the walls of the halls & room (yes, holes!), very noisy street in front of the hotel (bring earplugs!), bathroom fixtures extremely cheap & not maintained (sink was loose on the wall, vent did not work, towel heater non-functioning (I dont care about a towel heater, but why install one if it wont work?) shower walls were those very cheap plastic movable type that dont seal. Other notes: Tiny room w/ double bed; I requested a single, & they called this an "upgrade" - size was fine for one, but two people wouldnt have much room to navigate. Breakfast was ok - reasonably good coffee (for Italy, that is...excellent coffee by American standards), dry scrambled eggs, fresh fruit, pastries ranged from very good to not so good. The friendly, helpful staff, & the fact that I slept well (with ear plugs) is what saved this hotel from a lousy review.
Traveler's tip on dining
The Yellow Bar, near the Duomo, gave not only an excellent meal, it was also the least expensive I had in Florence. Definitely get reservations for this place - I waited 20 minutes to get in, but it was worth the wait! Dont let the name & decor throw you off - its Italian food, & its good stuff! I dont think you can get a bad gelato anywhere - lots of gelato stands everywhere - just eat it often. In fact, youre in Italy - just plan on gaining weight while there.

Amazing B&B
We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Palazzo Alexander. The staff is so helpful and the rooms are very comfortable. The breakfast room is beautiful and the food is excellent. I look forward to visiting Lucca again and staying at the Palazzo Alexander.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The Puccini Concert in the Basilica was beautiful. We enjoyed the unplanned events, such as an antique car show and a flag and drum competition.

Small but convenient
The Palazzo Alexander is well situated inside the walls of Lucca, so any site of interest is within walking distance. The staff were extremely helpful and breakfast is very decent with a selection of breads, cold cuts, cheese, yogurt, cereal and of course tea or cappuccino. I had a single room which was small but comfortable. I would describe the furnishings as having old-world charm (antique furniture etc.) but those expecting palatial exuberance will be disappointed. The hotel does not have a restaurant but there are quite a few within a 10 minute walk. Overall I had a very pleasant stay.
Traveler's tip
Be aware that if you need parking, it is available for 13 euro per night, around the block from the hotel, and that the hotel itself is in a spot not reachable by car.
