PARADOR SAN MIGUEL

Located on one of the main avenues in the city,in the historical downtown area, only a half block from the Central Alameda. The beautiful colonial-style building has three floors with 19 rooms and 4 suites. The facade had a grand entry door of carved cedar, opening to a lovely porch with a statue of St. Michael the Archangel. A wrought iron gate opens to the hotel vestibule, where walls of ochre, terra-cotta, beige and cream combine with dark green ironwork and green granite columns to provide a dramatic backdrop for the brilliant bougainvillea and geraniums that thrive in the homes central patio. . A majestic green granite stairway crowned with glorious stained glass leads to the second and third levels. On the second level terrace, you coFrom here you can catch a hint of the spellbinding flavors of our Oaxacan kitchen. Small gardens lead to the first level roomsuld relax or sunbathe accompanied by canaries in a kaleidoscope of multicolored flowers.

Avoid if you can
With the exception of a well-intentioned staff, there isnt a single reason to stay in this crummy hotel. For a substantial price, we were given a windowless room with a broken toilet and leaky faucet. Well, the room wasnt quite windowless: like most rooms at this hotel, the door had a large window with frosted glass, which meant that, day and night, the room was bathed in light from the light in the hallway. Turn off the lights and you can still read. It was awful. The restaurant was terrible and, to our great annoyance, the hotel directed us to park in a private lot for $20/day. Later we discovered there is ample, free on-street parking all over Oaxaca.
