General Information

What to expect: Offering 10 miles of pristine, uninterrupted beach, Kiawah Island is off the South Carolina coast, nestled between the Atlantic surf and the sweeping marshes of the mainland. The island is reached via a parkway that crosses a small bridge over the Kiawah River. Low-rise condominium buildings, private homes, golf courses, tennis courts, and resort-community facilities harmonize with a landscape of dunes, ponds, lagoons, and maritime forest.

Amenity highlights: The long private beach, sheltered by towering dunes, is the prime attraction here. The ResortQuest concierge can assist with restaurant suggestions and other area activities, such as coastal and deep-sea fishing, kayak tours, and sightseeing, sunset, and dolphin-watching cruises (surcharges for activities). The full-time golf coordinator can make tee times at more than 10 area courses.

Insider tip: Loggerhead turtles nest on the island’s beaches mid-May till mid-October. Babies are tiny, but adults can weigh up to 315 pounds. During nesting, the female loggerhead appears to be crying, with liquid flowing from her eyes. This "crying" flushes sand from her eyes and helps excrete excess salt from drinking seawater. Guests are encouraged to turn off all outdoor lights when not in use, to help keep hatchlings from traveling inland instead of out to sea.
