Great Budget Hotel

We were very impressed with the staff, service, location and amenities of this hotel. It is small and little dated, but it is on a beautiful, long beach with great swimming access. The food on the all-inclusive plan was better than we expected. We had a few tremendous meals and only one part of one meal was disappointing (don’t order the French Onion soup or caesar salad). The rest of the meals were very good to excellent. The fresh catch of the day was always great as were the soups(except for the one noted above). Ths hotel is relatively small and a little isolated, but the bus fare to St. John’s is only around $3 return and stops right outside the hotel gate. The sunsets were spectacular. We had very good live entertainment 5 out of the 7 nights we were there. Lots of dancing and fun was enjoyed by all. We will definitely go back.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Take the bus whenever you can. Taxi’s are quite expensive. If you are brave enough to rent a car it is probably you’re best bet but don’t drive on Saturdays as the roads are very busy with local traffic that day. Take the bus a few times before renting to get used to the driving conditions. The all-inclusive is defiitely the way to go as meals and alcolhol tend to be expensive otherwise.

Try other hotels

The location was great. The food was good but would recomend the all inclusive. The staff was friendly but slow. Fresh towels were hard to come by. We had no water on the last day of our stay.

avoid except for a few exceptions!

unfriendly staff, expensive drinks, and inconsistent service make this a hotel to avoid. What amplifies this hotel’s shortcomings is its isolated location on the remote southwest side of antigua... stay near dickinson’s bay for much better options!

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

if you make the mistake of staying here talk to the locals for tips on saving money on excursions and taxis... the staff at most of the hotels will support the rates of their own taxi drivers!!!

Never Again!!!

I travel to the Caribbean every year between Thanksgiving and Christmas, and typically don’t look for the plushest of accommodations because I don’t spend a lot of time in the room. This resort I thought would meet my needs for comfort, etc. It did not! I have been to a handful of islands and this has been my worst experience yet. The resort staff are rude and unaccommodating. It is advertised "TV in room (but only 5 fuzzy channels). We had gnats and mosquitoes in our room constantly. Our phone didn’t work, no remote for the TV, and the resort is isolated, requiring a taxi or a bus to do almost everything. It is also a beach that was mostly babyboomer age group. Not ruling out another trip to Antigua, but would stay on the west to northwest side of the island.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Recommend the catamaran cruise to Cade’s Reef and Shirley Heights on Sunday night. If you are looking for a younger crowd don’t stay here. Beach and island are beautiful though!

Very Relaxing Atmosphere

I spent four days in Antigua and didn’t leave the Resort at any time to go sight seeing or anything else.I needed some Rest and Relaxation and got exactly that at the Blue Heron. If I am ever in Antigua again my "home" will be The Blue Heron by Rex Resorts.

Relaxing Stay

The Blue Heron Resort is located in a remote area of Antigua on a beautiful beach. We booked the superior room which had a patio overlooking the pool & a partial ocean view. The staff was amongst the friendliest we’ve encountered in the Caribbean. We did the all-inclusive option. Our room was very clean although there was a problem with water leaking through the ceiling from above the shower, but they repaired it. We had no problem with water pressure and always had hot water. There was a small frig in the room. Air conditioner could have been colder but the ceiling fan also did a good job keeping the room cool. This is a basic hotel but staff is working to improve it. Food selection somewhat limited but we definitely didn’t go hungry. There’s entertainment a few nights a week. We had a rental car and drove the 4 miles to a casino every evening. Be careful driving. It’s on the left and the dark winding roads at night were tricky, mainly because the locals seem to drive very fast, and in the middle of the road with their high beams on. Mosquitoes are abundant at the resort, and it’s all open-air dining so bring your spray from home. Please boycott the jet-ski rental guy on the beach. He’s so cruel to the poor stray, but friendly beach dogs in the area and seriously injured one until he was stopped by guests at the resort.

Nice Beach

A little rough around the edges but still an OK Hotel. The food was exceptional. The hotel did a very good job of keeping the bugs out. The insecticide they used worked extremely well and was odorless. Antigua dissapointed us a bit because the roads are horrible and the water was not crystal clear at the several beaches we visited.
