What to expect: Located at the gateway to Sedona on Arizona's only designated All-American Road, the hotel is framed by extraordinary views of the red rocks. Film crews often stayed at this hotel in the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s while filming western movies.

Amenity highlights: One of the two outdoor pools has a flagstone sundeck with views of majestic Bell Rock, a reputed New Age vortex site. The main pool includes a spa tub. Barbecue areas with gas grills, sinks, and picnic tables adjoin each of the pools. A year-round Farmers Market at the south end of the hotel offers fresh produce.

Insider tip: The prickly pear cactus, distinguished by its flat, disk-shaped "pads," flourishes in the area. Its sweet, succulent fruit (known as "tuna" in Mexico) is used in candies, jellies, and syrups, which are sold at the on-site farmers market and in several Uptown shops. The plant was a staple of the Southwestern Native diet for centuries and may have medicinal benefits.

The hotel has two year-round heated pools. A spa tub adjoins the main pool. Seasonal complimentary water aerobics are offered two times a week. Guests receive complimentary access to a sister resort six miles away, Los Abrigados Resort & Spa, which features a fully equipped health spa with personal care services and a mini golf course.

The Sedona area offers scores of hiking trails for all levels of expertise. The Bell Rock Pathway, about 300 yards from the hotel, features close-up views of Bell Rock (a reputed New Age vortex site) and Courthouse Butte. Red Rock State Park, 10.5 miles away, offers self-guided and ranger-led tours, including birding walks. At Slide Rock State Park, 12.5 miles from the hotel, visitors can slide down a natural water chute. The West Fork Trail, about a mile past the park, is a leafy hike with numerous creek crossings and close-up views of the sheer canyon walls. (All vehicles parked in trailhead lots must display a Red Rock Pass, sold at many area stores, hotels, and trailheads.)

Area golf courses combine top-notch play with spectacular scenery. Among those open to the public are the Oakcreek Country Club, designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and Robert Trent Jones Jr., and the Sedona Golf Resort. Both are about one mile away.

Horseback riding, mountain biking, and hot-air ballooning are other popular pursuits. Jeep tours visit canyons, red-rock landscapes, and centuries-old Native American ruins.
