A fading former beauty.
-We stayed at the Astoria for one night in mid-May. This is an old Art-Deco building which has seen better days. It is permeated by stale musty odors. Though the furniture is old, the hotel is fairly clean. The breakfast was uninspired but adequate. Its positives are the location and price. Parking is inconvenient as you have to feed the meter every four hours.
Traveler's tip on dining
-Try the Dom Pedro restaurant one block away (past the Tourist Information Center). This is typical Portugese cooking at very reasonable prices.

CLASSICAL AND STILL RELEVANT
Wellsituated for exploring the city. Conventient if arriving by car or train.. Helpful staff. Good breakfast.Though older hotel it is classically beautiful. Balcony overlookinig the river. Still quiet though facing main street.

Step Back to the 50s
The hotel was very old with decor that dated back to the 50s when it was probably in its prime. The people working there were great. The resturant in the hotel served excellent food but did not know their wine well and served me a young white wine when I asked for a dry, aged wine. The hotel was in excellent proximity to the university. Parking was across the street and quite safe.
