General Information
What to expect: A magnificent Chinese junk made of jade stands in the atrium-style lobby of the White Swan, which also features rockery, a waterfall, pond, and pavilion, said to resemble the landscapes of southern China. Sweeping views of the Pearl River can be seen from the lobby and many of the restaurants, which are filled with business people and Western visitors.
Amenity highlights: The White Swan has a full range of amenities, from ten restaurants to a comprehensive conference and business center. Squash courts, two outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, and a health center with spa pool and sauna (and steam room in the men's section) add to the facilities. Traditional furnishings and décor add a distinctive Chinese flair to the public areas.
Insider tip: Built in the 1980s, the White Swan is known as one of the first higher-class hotels in China; guests have included U.S. and world presidents and monarchs. Shamian Island, on which the hotel stands, is a Colonial enclave with European-style buildings and a tranquil atmosphere, best appreciated in the early morning when locals enjoy tai chi and exercises in the leafy streets.
