General Information
What to expect: Built by the Pennsylvania Railroad, Hotel Pennsylvania was the largest hotel in the world when it opened in 1919 with 2,200 rooms. Today it has fewer (and larger) rooms, but the vast marble lobby is still filled with guests coming and going around the clock.
Amenity highlights: An offshoot of Lindy's Theater District hangout serves the restaurant's famed cheesecake. A lobby coffee spot is open 24 hours a day. |

Insider tip: In 1940, The Glenn Miller Orchestra immortalized Hotel Pennsylvania, whose ballroom was a magnet for Big Band-era bands, with a swing classic, Pennsylvania 6-5000, inspired by the hotel's telephone number. On calls to the hotel, the shouted musical phrase is heard before an operator answers.
