Not impressed

The front office receptionists was not helpful at all (very unprofessional). Did not give any much needed information about hotel access to ice etc., had to ask about phone assistant, discounts to restaurants, just no communication or acknowledgement to clients/patrons at all. My first time to visit New York and it would have been better if hotel front office staff would have been professional and cared about its patrons. I plan to revisit New York City and I will not stay at the Modern or recommend it. Sincerely

Good place to stay

Great hotel staff service. Clean, quiet, cool, and comfortable rooms. Hotel is older and needs a little work on repairs (old water damage on the ceiling) but we spent our time seeing the beautiful city and not sitting in our room!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Great location for NYC sightseeing trip. Quick walk to Central Park, Times Square or the Theatre District. Easy to get to the subway.

Great hotel for what you pay!

I wasn’t sure what to expect upon arriving at the Moderne, but I was pleased to discover it was amazing! I had a great stay and have very few complaints. The bathroom was super nice! The rooms look exactly like the pictures. Beds were comfy. You’re literally minutes from Times Square--GREAT LOCATION. Good service! Only complaints are that you had to ask for ice--you have no direct access to an ice or pop machine, but that’s minor. Also, our bedroom window didn’t lock, so anybody could have come in from the outside. But overall, you get an AMAZING hotel for the small amount you pay.

The Moderne Hotel

Hotel is located at convenient location. Small but clean, comfortable hotel. This is a type of hotel you just need for sleep. Don’t expect too much. No coffee maker. Basic items (towels, champoo, soap, hair dryer, iron) are provided. There is only one shower glass wall (by design), so water obviously splashes to the floor, which creates water pool. It was weired.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Elevator is very slow. We used stairs most of time (We stayed at 4th Floor).

Comfortable, helpful and convenient!

If your looking for somewhere cheap with a good location The Moderne is PERFECT. The rooms where clean, the staff was extremely helpful with our questions about NYC and the area and transportation to the airport. It’s not the fanciest hotel and doesn’t exactly have a great view but who’s going to stare out the window of their hotel while in New York City anyways?! Overall, our stay was great.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Don’t be SO entirely picky, a hotel is just to stay in for a few days, NOT to live in for the rest of your life.

Great location and large rooms, but a little run down...

The Moderne is in a great location and offers good value, but needs some maintenance. We were upgraded to a suite on the 8th floor which turned out to be the largest room I’ve ever had in New York City. It appears that they’ve had some water damage in the common areas and haven’t finished their repairs. Once the repairs are completed, I believe that the Moderne will shine bright again. Oh, they did have the slowest elevator I’ve ever been on.

Loved it.

I chose a small hotel because I hate long elevator waits. This was the perfect pick. Quaint, trendy and in a great location (4 blocks south and Central Park and 5 blocks north of Times Square. If you are in NYC to spend time out on the town and just need a great place to sleep, this is it, very quiet. Very clean. Not a lot of extras i.e. exercise room etc. There was a "coffee/tea room" but the coffee maker was out of service. There was also no ice machine but the staff brought it to the room when we asked. Much nicer than other places I’ve stayed in the city in this price range in the past. Would definately return.

Traveler's tip on dining

Great deli w/ hot breakfast and great prices around the corner on 8th Ave. called "Lenny’s". McGee’s Pub across the street and something "jack", a Greek restaurant on 55th and Broadway were also very good, prices average.

Not Recommended At All

Rooms feel like guest house, very small (not as in the web site), poor service, staff was not nice at all (we asked for wake up call that never arrived). Not recommended at all.

Great deal and great location

It’s not a super fancy hotel by any means. It’s a great place to stay if you want to be really close to Times Square. It’s in a safe location that’s walking distance to Times Square, Central Park and Metro station. The accommodations were good; they weren’t first class and the rooms are small, but it’s perfect if you plan to spend the whole day in the city and just need a place to crash that’s clean safe and comfortable.

I would totally recommend this hotel to anyone who wants a hotel that is cheap and convenient. The staffs are super nice and courteous. It is conveniently located to many attraction. My husband and I walked every night to Times Square after dinner time. It was very nice.

Adorable, comfy room--great location!

We got upgraded AND allowed to check in early, so our stay at the Moderne started off great. We’d been in town on business (staying at the Sheraton NY) for the first two nights, but opted for one more night on our own, so we switched hotels. After the luxury of the Sheraton, I was concerned, but the suite at the Moderne was just adorable. We loved the decor and the french doors, and the bed was very comfy. We were there in March, so no need for AC. There is construction across the street, which was noisy in the morning, but we were headed out early anyway. The desk held our bags while we did some more sightseeing before heading to the airport in the evening. The location is fabulous--walking distance to Theatre Dist./Times Square/Central Park. All in all, a good experience.

Good for the price

For the price, it’s a fair deal. The rooms are small, and unless you are at the front, the window does not provide much light (it’s to a narrow alley, right against another tall building), but it is clean, in a good location, and fairly reasonable. The front desk staff is pleasant, and so long as one isn’t planning on hanging out in his/her room for hours, watching the limited TV offerings, this is a good choice at this price point.

Not Impressed

Small rooms, but I expected that. The biggest problem was the dinosaur A/C unit that rattled all night trying to run, then shut down for 30 min.s, then would try again. As you might imagine, NO SLEEP was obtained either night.

Great Location - good solid middle of the road hotel

Nothing fancy, looking a just a bit worn, but rooms were clean and bedding was very comfortable. Excellent service on check in and check out, let me check in at 10am since they had a room available. Location is perfect, wasn’t bothered at all by any noise. No view from the room, but as every says - you’re in New York - you won’t be in your room much.

Mixed bag

Location is amazing. Room was clean and adequate. Hotel staff gave misinformation when asked directions and promised ice delivered to room (what were the in-room ice containers for?) but never showed up.

Would stay again

For a one or two person stay, this hotel was great. It is right between Times Square and Central Park. The staff was friendly and helpful. I will definitely look for this hotel on my next stay i New York.

something besides mainstream

If you’re heading to NYC and looking for a place that gives you a more "residential" feel The Moderne is the place for you. When I visit a city I enjoy feeling more like a resident than a visitor. Staying in The Moderne gave me the feeling I was in my own apartment, not in a hotel chain. There are a few things you give up for that feeling (super nice rooms, a few amenities, etc.) but all in all my stay at The Moderne was pleasant. The decor was fun and we even got a free upgrade to a king suite overlooking the street. I’d stay there again.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

This hotel is a very short walk to Times Square and Central Park and is convenient to most major attractions.

Too dark too small as a hole in basement

Nice location, that’s the only reason I picked up this hotel. But, was very disappointed as it has no windor, a broken mirror in bathroom and no room service at all. You just have to do everything by yourself.

Not impressed

We paid for a deluxe room but got a small crowded room. The hotel is rundown and needs to be remodeled. We stayed at this hotel a few years ago and our deluxe room was nice but now the rugs are worn the wallpaper is peeling at the edges. Not impressed.

Not impressed

While I wasn’t expecting a four-star experience, I was expecting satisfactory comfort and a coffee bar...as advertised on the hotel’s website. Unfortunately, the location and the price were the only good things about this hotel. The phone in the room did not work. The TV cable hookup was loose (we fixed it for a better picture) and the bed was hard and lumpy. No coffee and indifferent staff at the front desk topped off a less than satisfactory experience. We had to recharge our magnetic room key each time we used it. Will look for a better alternative next time!

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Easy walk to Central Park, Columbus Circle, Metro stops, The Lincoln Center and a nice bistro at Broadway and W 55th.

Great location and great price

My husband, daughter, and I had an extremely enjoyable stay at The Moderne. The location was perfect. We were 1/2 block from the David Letterman studio and got to attend his show. We were within a short walk to Times Square and to the theatres. We had an excellent time on our first trip to New York and would definitely stay at The Moderne again as well as recommend it to others!

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Be prepared to walk and you can go just about anywhere you want on foot. Take time to enjoy the city and not just the tourist highlights. We enjoyed the harbor lights cruise. We loved Shrek The Musical!

Good choice for this price.

Generally I’m satisfied with this hotel, it’s location is very good, the Time Square is app. 6-7 minutes walk, the southern part of the Central Park is about 5 minutes. You know, I couldn’t afford me a posh hotel in Manhattan, but for this price it was pretty clean and well equipped. I only missed a small fridge from my room. And I only used for sleeping this hotel, in the other time I visited the most interresting and exciting parts of NY. So, I recommend this hotel for everybody who wants to save money on accomodation, and if I ever make a trip again to NY, I will not hesitate to choose the Moderne.

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

Don’t miss NY, the best city to see in the USA!
