Great hotel
Great hotel (interesting history), recently renovated, very clean, comfortable and quiet (street noisy at night if windows open). Superb staff with fairly good to excellent English. Free tea or coffee brought to the rooms on request. Internet (free) connection excellent. Deluxe room spacious; single rooms looked comfortable also. Breakfast buffet, modest (cereal, meat cold cuts and cheese selection, tomato, cucumber, boiled eggs, fresh fruit, juice selection, tea, coffee, bread and pastry selection) but plentiful. Hotel is an easy 6+ block walk to Vosstaniya Ploshchad subway across from Moscow station on Nevsky Prospect or you can walk all the way down Nevsky to take in the atmosphere. Easy walking in the area around the hotel to Smolny Institute/Monastery, delightful parks and also walked through the back streets back to hotel from the central part of St. P. Some good restaurants, bakeries, produce shops around the hotel (certainly within a few blocks). People on streets helpful and friendly with directions, but maps available at hotel very easy to follow. Would absolutely stay here again.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Chocolate desserts at Acquarel excellent. Aragvi restaurant (9 Fontanky Reky) Georgian, small, excellent atmosphere and food, reasonably priced; a comfortable 20+ min evening walk back to the hotel. Must sees: Church of the Resurrection including spectacular inside; haggling in the souvenir market across the street; St Issacs climbing the colonnade (200 steps) for the city view and also inside (separate tickets); Hermitage worth a visit but artwork not well displayed by western standards.

Good hotel
Hotel Vera is a small newly renovated hotel within walking distance of Nevsky Prospekt and Moscowskii Vaksal. Only negative thing was the street noise as there is not air conditioning so we slept with open windows. Staff all had a good command of English.
Comment from the hotel's management
Posted: 13-Sep-09We are very sorry that you were under the impression that the hotel does not have air conditioning. Hotel Vera does have air conditioning throughout the hotel, including all guest rooms. But on some floors, we use central air conditioning, which is regulated from the reception desk by our staff. We try to accommodate our guest requests for climate control; in the hotel information book that we provide in all guest rooms, we advise guests to call the front desk with any request to regulate the temperature. If we had known of your preference, we would have opened the air vents wider in the room to allow for more airflow, or changed the temperature settings.
