About what I expected for the price
My wife, our two young children and I stayed for two weekday nights. The hotel was comfortable, safe and reasonably quiet and the two (essentially) queen-sized beds accommodated us well. Even though it was early November, we found the room stayed quite warm without ever having to use the fireplace or furnace. In fact, at night it was almost too warm for comfortable sleep (though, we like to sleep in 60 degrees or less, so maybe others would find the temperature to be just fine). We would have opened the sliding door to let the cool night air in, but being on the ground floor, we decided that wouldnt be the safest thing to do (not that the hotel is in a bad area--does Monterey even *have* bad areas?--but thats just common sense). Like most hotels weve stayed in, the housekeeping staff ignored our preference for not replacing our towels every day and in fact they left us with less towels than we started with on the first night. This was a bit of an annoyance because having four people in the room we actually could have used four bath towels. We did not eat at the hotel for any meals, so I cannot comment on that. Similarly, being early November, we did not use the swimming pool or hot tub, though they appeared to be available still. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and would probably stay there again, though if we did we would request a room on one of the upper floors.

It was great, But....
The hotel itself was great. However, when I slept in the bed the next day I had what looked like little bites on my hands and legs. They went away after a while but I do believe they were from the hotel, unfortunately. I would of loved to go back to the hotel too.

In need of more renovation.
The location and outside looked nice, as did the lobby, but the hotel was just too old and showing its wear. The elevator in the main lobby didnt work , and were told that it was because it was overheating. The people in front of us (a mother and daughter) had to hand carry their luggage up three flights of stairs, although to be fair the front desk employee then helped them up the stairs after the first flight, leaving us to wait at the desk until he got back. Our room was in the second building, first floor, which actually requires you to walk down a flight of stairs to get to. the hallways smelled musty and old, and the room, while clean was very warm. The hotel, like many in Monterey doesnt have air conditioning, but the window wouldnt open more than an inch, and when requested, we were only given a small portable fan. I understand that most weeks would be fine, but this was the middle of October, but it just added another issue with the room. The soda machine didnt work, and the TV input was incorrect, so my wife wasnt able to get the TV back on until I arrived.

Very Nice Hotel, Will Stay Again
Nice hotel located in Monterey with excellent service. My only complaint was the the non working coffee maker. The bed linen was very comfortable and we had a wonderful stay.

Very Nice Hotel
My husband and I stayed in 8 hotels on our recent 2,000 mile road trip. The Hotel Abrego was the nicest place we stayed. The hotel is new so it was very clean and the decor and amenities just made you feel special. The staff was very friendly and quite helpful. We will stay here again!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Cannery Row and the 17-mile Drive were highlights for us.

Love the Remodeled Room
I had read that the hotel had been renovated and asked for a room that had been completed remodeled which is in the same building as the front desk. We were not disappointed. Instead of what I thought would be an average hotel room, I felt like we were in a room at the Hyatt. It was so beautiful I had to take photos of the room and bathroom. Even the bath robes were new. The only downside is that our Deluxe King room was not king size - the room itself was quite small probably because the bathroom was large.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Make sure you ask the front desk for an upgrade to a room in the main building where all the units have been remodeled. Ask for two beds - the room will be larger and include a fireplace - which is what one of our friends had. Take a walk to Trader Joes to fill up on fresh fruits and stock in your fridge.

This hotel was very comfortable and quiet; but the service was unbeatable. The staff was very nice and quite helpful. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone visiting Monterey, CA.

Not impressed.
Paid for fireplace room and fireplace did not work. Room door kept getting stuck and I would have to call the front desk to have someone let me out. I reported these things to the front desk and they did not fix them. I was offered no discount and if they had simply comped me to their continental breakfast I would have been ok with the whole thing, but they didnt. Also, no AC and it was pretty hot in Monterey that week.

A pretty good experience
The only surprise was the fact that I had prepaid for my stay by charge card to Expedia a month before the trip. Thr hotel location is convenient to the Monterey Convention center by foot, 20 minutes max at slow walk. The room was quite recently refurbed but lacked cross ventilation or AC. No AC is the rule in Monterey from previous visits to the area.
Traveler's tip on dining
The hotel has a restaurant but there is a relatively good chinese place across the street and a Dennys within a block. There are numerous restaurants within a 15min walk.

Very nice, very reasonable
Just a few blocks from Cannery Row this was a very nice hotel. They didnt have the 2 nite minimum like a lot of the hotels in the area. Nice pool, free wi-fi (low speed), clean rooms, even a fireplace - we would definitely recommend Hotel Abrego.

Very Nice Hotel
Whem we checked in we chose to upgrade to a newly remodeled room with a fireplace and flat screen TV. The room was lovely and the bathroom was very spa-like. The only downside to the upgraded room was that it faced a noisy street. It was not a problem unless you opened the patio door. Overall the hotel staff were really nice and I was very pleased with the stay - I would stay there again.

Not very cooperative
Was unable to make initial reservation due to sudden illness; was told by front desk to contact the manager regarding a refund (the manager was unavailable every time we called). We finally got an indirect reply almost a full week later from the manager that no refund would be offered. We even said wed consider staying there the following weekend, however no concessions were offered. I guess well stay somewhere else when were in Monterey.

Dont be Fooled
If you are planning to stay at this hotel, BE SURE to get a room in the new, renovated building where reception is located (only pics they show on their website). This is where I ended up after being put in 2 rooms in the outer buildings. Those buildings look nice on the outside, but are still the Silver Dollar Inn rooms of the previous motel. You will be paying for a motel room at a hotel rate.

Good Location, New Renovations
In final stages of a very nice remodeling, well located, and a good value. Walkable to downtown and the harbor with a Trader Joes nearby. Very comfortable bed. Our room overlooked the drive and pool and faced east so would ask for a different room next time. Lack of air conditioning on one of the warm coast days made leaving the window open important, but cooled down in the evening. Staff gave some great local tips.
Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks
Tuesday Monterey Farmers Market (all day)and nearby Trader Joes make for great places to pick up fresh fruit, snacks - eating great food and saving, too.

The Sand Dollar Hotel Abrego
When I got into town, I stopped to get pointers to the hotel. The visitor center employee told me the hotel had recently changed names and was finishing up construction. A thought came over me like the one I had from a trip a few years back when I pulled up to a hotel in San Diego that was "under construction". The hotel had a pool torn apart in the heat of summer, no parking, elevators down...I thought, "not again". However, the Hotel Abrego was so different. Being newly renovated, the rooms were so clean, and fresh. New paint all around the building. Clean kitchen and front desk area. Fireplaces in the rooms....The staff was very friendly and helpful. The location of the hotel is close to town within walking distance. It was great to be able to park the car for a few days and walk, or take a trolley to the places we wanted to visit. Truly a nice adventure!!! I would recommend this hotel to anyone traveling to Monterey.

Not worth the price
The room resembled any room you would come across at a Motel 6 not including the "fireplace". The hotel claims to have free high speed wireless internet but what they fail to tell you is that you practically have to stand on top of your toilet with a tinfoil hat in order to get 2 bars of connection. When I called the service desk to inquire about the connection the only suggestion they could provide was to purchase "the higher speed premium internet connection", which needless to say still would not solve the actual connection problem. After returning to our room for the day I noticed the "voice message" light was blinking on my phone. Ironically the number command to retrieve said "voice message" was not included on the phone with the rest of the commands. When I called the service desk to inquire about how to retrieve this "voice message" the representative was clueless how to access it and I was promised a return phone call - one which I never received throughout my entire stay at this hotel. On top of everything else I was unable to get a full nights rest due to the constant sounds of footsteps that could be heard throughout my room whenever anyone would walk near due to the poorly designed wooden walkway that laid across my section of the hotel. Sadly I have had better service staying at a Extend A Stay hotel for half the cost of what I paid to stay at this 2 star hotel establishment.

So much better than expected
The pictures and description sounded really good so we just hoped it lived up to our expectations. It was so much better than that. Great rooms. New. Very helpful/friendly staff.

A Good Value in Monterey
The first room that I was given was small and smelled of smoke, so I asked for another room and was given a newly refurbished room which was quite large. The location is very convenient, near the highway and in Old Monterey, which has very many adobes and other buildings from the 19th century. There is a historical path - the hotel can give you a map. The staff was very friendly and helpful.
Traveler's tip on recreational activities
The city-run sports center is only a few blocks up Washington Street and they have a huge gym and 2 pools. It only costs $5.75 to go in and work out for the day. But if you drive there, be sure to bring coins for parking meters, even on Sunday.

Hotel Being Remodeled and New Name
We booked this hotel two months prior under the name "Sand Dollar". When we pulled up to the hotel (June 29) it was the "Hotel Abrego" under construction. There wasnt even a place to park our car. The pool was closed and we assumed we werent going to get a room. The staff was extremely accommodating to us. They had a room ready for us. The room was very clean and modern. Very updated. They honored continental breakfast for us but it seemed as if they were going to start charging new guests for breakfast. This will be a very nice hotel when finished. Close to the aquarium, beaches, Highway 1, 17 mile drive and carmel.
