Very Nice Hotel
We were pleasantly surprised with this hotel. It was a good sized room, very comfortable, and had a pretty big bathroom for a hotel room. There are plenty of dining choices in the hotel, all of which had some pretty good food. I recommend trying the shisha pipe (its only tobacco) in the garden room on the roof for anyone that hasnt tried it. It is closer to the airport than downtown Cairo, but the black & white taxis get you anywhere you need to go at a pretty decent price (about $10 average to downtown). The only drawback is that some cab drivers dont know how to get to the hotel, but if you get them in the general area, they have convenient signs of where the hotel is located. Make sure to grab a card with driving directions in Arabic from the hotel.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
The Giza Pyramids were great, but if you take a taxi there, the cab driver might let someone in the cab to try to sell you a camel rental. Dont be fooled if they say theyre the police, while wearing regular clothes, and that you cannot proceed to the entrance without a camel rental. Have them show you credentials if they claim it, and continue on to the entrance. To save you all that trouble, I recommend booking a tour (there are several available) from Expedia; they were pretty good.

Karvin Hotel
Although the Karvin is not at the same quality level as Le Meridien or the J.W. Marriott, it is a clean hotel for Egyptian standards. What I enjoyed the most was that the owner made a personal effort to talk with the guests both in the lobby and in the various restaurants within the hotel. It may not be the best, but it was good enough for me to attempt to make reservations on my next trip . . . but they were booked for the Holiday Season!

Good value, friendly
Having previously only stayed at the Sheraton and other top hotels, I booked the Karvin based on price and Expedia reviews. I wasnt disappointed. Small rooms but clean and bathrooms that work. Nice roof terrace. Good on site restaurants. Friendly all round. Within walking distance there is a good pizza place and a supermarket.
Traveler's tip
If you leave the hotel, take the available business cards with address and directions in Arabic - few taxi drivers know where anything is in Cairo and you could get frustrated otherwise! Ask advice about taxi fares! Dont think that everyone is trying to rip you off - mostly people are very friendly.
