No Aloha at Inn of the Volcano

After two nights of a four night reservation we couldn’t stand it anymore. Cramped room, scratchy linen, lumpy bed. Extremely rude host. Bad vibe all the way around. Doors are padlocked. Do NOT expect any kind of a welcome or interaction at this place if you do decide to book here. Also, there is a NO BATH rule, no shoes rule, and NO TOILET FLUSHING RULE. The host actually said to me, "This is a RENTAL PROPERTY NOT A HOTEL, I dont know what it is that you want!" NICE.

DO stop in at the little Volcano general store, the couple who runs it are super cute! You can get an incredible cup of coffee early, they open at 5AM, so if you want to do a pre-dawn hike of the crater stop there for your java, and pick up a freshly made sushi roll.

Great value for money and very private.

Fantastic place for a private romantic getaway as you don’t see a soul there... but if you are looking for human interaction, advice on local spots, or even breakfast, this is not the place for you. The bed was extremely uncomfortable and the sheets scratchy. The room was not cleaned or made up during my stay. Again, great if you want your privacy. Many plus points: Very quaint and pretty, very close to Volcano stores and restaurants as well as the Volcanoes National Park. Extensive DVD/video collection which comes in useful as there is zero nightlife in Volcano. They also provide wine glasses, bottle opener, fridge, coolers, umbrellas, slippers, coats, and free basic internet for email in the library (You can’t youtube or open your email attachments). All in all, I would recommend as great value for money.

Traveler's tip on nightlife

Hike until you drop as there are no bars to lure you into late hour troubles.

Fine way to visit Volcano National Park

Very quaint local inn in an old large mansion, "Sushi Cottage" is cute and comfortable. Nice to have extra room. Remember, it’s in a rain forrest so dampness is part of the experience anywhere you go in Volcano.

Traveler's tip on recreational activities

Allow plenty of time in Volcano National Park. Walking across lava fields is slow going. Ask Park attendant about Military Camp Cafeteria for a bargain on meals in the park. Drive down to see lava flow at night is worth the trip even though you don’t get up close and personal with lava any more. Try to leave by 5:15 and pick up your own picnic on the way. Ask the ranger for directions to "Subway" or stop at 7-11.
