Much better than expected
If you are looking for a quaint, charming hotel in Malta, this is not it. The only gripe I had about the Topaz was that my husband and I usually opt for smaller, quieter hotels, and this was our fourth choice on Expedia. The indoor pool, while beautiful, was hardly ever free of crowds of sreaming children. Even so, with so much to do on Malta, we really never wanted to go swimming anyways. The hotel staff was extremely kind and helpful and the room was always kept very clean. Also, they do not provide any kind of parking, so if you are renting a car, be aware that on some busy nights, you might have to circle for a spot several times. This only happened once, but it was not even the busy season. Otherwise, the Topaz on the whole made for a great launching point for us to get out and see the island.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Get out there! I have never seen such a small country with so much to see and do. There are temples and ancient ruins all over the island, along with stunning natural wonders and historic cathedrals. See as much as you can. If staying in Buggiba, make sure to visit the Irish Bar, a family owned operation with great food, drink, and atmosphere! Also, get to know the Maltese where you can, they are a very friendly and welcoming people.

Not good!!
Although the hotel location was good, the overall quality of service, cleanliness and maintenance seemed poor. There was a noxious odor that prevailed throughout the section we were staying in; The water pressure in the morning was variable; It took 4 tries to get a TV remote that worked; The receptionists were at times unaccomodating; If you paused a moment while eating breakfast, the wait people would bus your plates before you finished. It goes on and on!!! Not a good place to stay.
