St Joseph Luxor Hotel
The St Joseph Luxor Hotel had a good location in Luxor. I didnt care so much that our room rate quintupled for New Years Eve when we had been staying for a week already at the hotel. I knew in advance but still didnt like it. There was tourist police stationed at the hotel 24/7 which made you feel a little more secure. The tourist police seemed to want to really be helpful to you. The roof top terrace had great views of the Nile and was a nice place to relax. The restaurant inside the hotel was good also. Nile view from our balcony was nice. Room was cold at night in December and we could find no heat control inside the room - however, we didnt request more blankets as we should have. Elevator was old small and didnt work all the time and so it was a bother walking the stairs to an upper floor room once in awhile. Almost all the guests at the hotel were from England but the hotel staff did not speak English as well as might have been expected. The hotel was rated a 3 star hotel (I have no idea by whom) and we had stayed in a 4 star hotel the previous week in Egypt. There was a huge difference between a 4 star and a 3 star hotel with a 3 star hotel being dramatically lower level compared to a 4 star hotel. Another couple told us exactly the same thing and had exactly the same experience. Nonetheless, the St Joseph was a good hotel to stay at for the price.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
I would recommend the English tour company Thomson. We used American Express also but didnt feel they were quite as good as Thomson. Our guide books said the same thing.

Great value for money
It was a pleasant surprise to find a 2* hotel which was so clean and well maintained. Our room on the 6th floor facing the Nile river was excellent. The serving staff and the front desk were very helpful as regards the hotel service as well as finding tourist guides, taxis etc.
Traveler's tip on shopping
Follow 1 tip while moving around/shopping in Luxor or any part of Egypt - BARGAIN. If any service or product provider quotes EGP 100, bargain for as low a price as EGP 20. And when they quote a price in "Pounds", make sure they are taliking about Egyptian pound and not GBP.
