Lovely Charleston Hotel

Decided to make a stop in Charleston on our way to the NC mountains. Mills House was an excellent choice. Staff was great, the hotel itself is beautiful and the location, right in the heart of the historic district could not be better.

Don’t stay there.

No one helps you. You have to figure things out on your own. Like parking. You have to park in a public parking garage and if they do it for you hold on to your wallet they up charge and call it valet. Our first room the air conditioner didn’t work right and the room stayed at around 80 degrees. In the morning after sweating all night the shower had no hot water. There is no security at this hotel Guests party in the hall ways and the pool until 2am or later screaming banging doors drunk. Don’t waste your money. We paid a lot for this room. The only thing good was location and the rooms were clean.

Great as usual

I love the Mills House. I attended a state conference recently and registered late so I was unable to stay at conference hotel. This suited me fine as I like being on my own. One day it poured rain as I returned to the Mills House from the conference. I was met at the door by a hotel employee handing out still warm from the laundry towels to guest as they entered. The gracious and thoughtful act made me smile and was a testament to why the Mills House is the best hotel in the city

Nice neighborhood

Hotel was nice. It has a great location. The rooms are on the smallish side. The breakfast was very good. And the few extra dollars of valet parking was worth it.

Great weekend in Charleston

The hotel was very nice. The staff was friendly. We loved the location, it was in the historic district of Charleston. Close to lots of great restaurates. The shopping, (if you are into shopping), on King street was very good. We were there during the art festival. There were lots of concerts, plays and art work within walking distance of the hotel.

Absolutely beautiful hotel! Very Historic and convenient!

We arrived early so our room was not ready. We opted to store our luggage and wait for about 2 hours and checkout the area. The desk clerk was very accommodating and asked if waiting was a problem. We said it was absolutely not a problem.Much to her surprise that we were not upset about our wait( because she found other patrons not as understanding that day) she upgraded us to a suite! We were thrilled! It always pays to be understanding and not rude when your room is not ready. They were very hospitable from the beginning to our departure. A fabulous location and beautiful hotel! We will definitely return!

Good Location.

Location good. (One block from King Street, where all the good shopping is; 2-3 blocds from Bay Street, which has a lot of restaurant choices; and, one block north of Broad which is 4-5 blocks from the southern-most tip of the peninsula--the walk takes you through an elite, slow-paced neighborhood where you view very nice residences along the way.) Lobby nice. Room pleasant enough, and clean. Left laptop at home, but business center had two free computers to use. Hotel a little too expensive, but most in Charleston are. Hotel parking is also expensive, but not many options in this high-demand area. Would recommend you avoid any room ending in 01 (such as 301,401, 501, etc.) since they are too close to the elevators. You hear a lot of talking as people come and go.

Elegant Charleston hotel

The Mills House was in easy walking distance to almost all the Charleston attractions, and the walkway to the adjacent parking garage made car access easy. The lobby is very elegant, with nice areas for meeting or waiting, and the bar and restaurant are upscale and handsomely decorated but friendly. Our room was not large, but nicely decorated and clean, and pretty quiet.

pleasant stay

Beautifully decorated for the holiday season, we found the hotel comfortable and the staff accomodating. The location is very central to all the historic district has to offer, restaurants and shops close by. Lovely courtyard, and impressive entrance, small rooms, but clean and well kept. The only criticism would be that the shower cannot be hand held, plumbing could be updated. Apparently, recently the hotel had a major renovation, I am surprised that this was not considered important. Wonderful brunch available on Sundays and holidays, but for breakfast and dinner, try some of the other restaurants within a two minute walk. Overall, good value for the money, we would return.

Historic district gem

My sister and I spent a delightful week at the Mill House Hotel right in the middle of the historic district. We could conveniently walk the historic district, visit the town market, shop on King Street, and eat at various restaurants. The $5 off and on all day trolly has a pick-up across the street for the days we ventured farther afield. . Our room was beautiful, clean, and cozy with period details. We requested a portable refrigerator and it was promptly delivered. The hotel is very comfortable with friendly, capable staff. I appreciated the coffee bar for feeding my addiction to mocha latte. A friend invited us to a reception in the dining room/bar/garden and the food was delicious. We timed our visit so we could take advantage of the Preservation Society sponsored fall home and garden tour. It’s a must for anyone interested in going inside the homes and gardens and came with the added bonus of the personal histories of the homes visited. We also did the walking tour of Civil War sites that leaves from the hotel lobby and that was delightful and informative. We stayed a week and couldn’t get it all in!

We avoided the steamy hot summer weather of Charleston and chose mid October for our visit. The weather was delightful in the day and a light sweater was just right at night.

An enjoyable experience.

My wife and I spent four nights at the hotel recently. Our overall experience was excellent even though when asked to rate the hotel in segments, it may appear less than excellent. The fact that the bathrooms are smaller than new hotels is offset by its historic feel and ambience. The breakfast in the restaurant was excellent. The staff was extremely friendly. Valet parking convenient and quick. Front desk and concierge helpful and friendly. Great restaurants across the narrow street from the hotel; Queens 82, Poogans Porch; and Hymans Seafood located four or five blocks down the street, whick serves great seafood at family prices. The flounder is as large as the plate. If we return to Charleston, we would stay at the Mill’s House again.

Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay

Get the concierge to line up a small bus tour on your first day. Ask for the southern, middle age guy that formerly lived in Moultrie, Ga. He was provided a first rate commentary on the city combining an expertise in architect, history, and geography rivaling most college professors.

Great Hotel, Fabulous Location

Everything about the hotel was wonderful including the price. I feel it has the best location in the historic district. We have stayed at many hotels in the historic district and this one is the best combination of quality and value.

Great Location

I enjoyed my stay here, this hotel was in the very heart of the historic district. Pricey parking for either their valet or the city garage right next door. Room was nice and clean, but tub/shower had mildew in the corners and was very dark. I know it’s a very old historic hotel and I guess I can overlook that. Staff was very friendly and helpful.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

So much to see and do in just a couple of days. Take the trolley tour to get an overview of the city first before starting out to see by foot. Lots of great eating places around too. Lots of history, lots of great architecture, a must see city!

We made a great choice!!

The Mills House Hotel was a great choice for our stay in Charleston. It is a very elegant hotel located in the center of all the action. Short walks to all the best restaurants and sights. We ate at Hyman’s seafood. Super atmosphere and great seafood in a casual setting. We received a good Expedia deal at Mills House. You will not be disappointed if you stay here.

Rooms too small

The rooms are too small and there are other rooms in the near vicinity that are larger and less expensive.

Wonderful Stay

We could not have had a better stay at the Mills House Hotel. Every detail was managed well. Because of our recent bookings at other hotels in this chain, we were automatically upgraded to their priority club. Great amenities came with the upgrade, which made our stay more enjoyable. The entire staff was friendly, courteous, and professional. The front desk and concierge made dinner suggestions and reservations for us both nights, with which we were very satisfied. We could not have stayed in a better hotel. We will stay there again if we return.

The hotel was very nice and within walking distance to all the historical sights. The staff was a bit snobish at first but during our visit they warmed up to us. I would stay there again because it was clean and the location was ideal.
