Close to everything "down under"

The Marriott on College Street in Sydney was fantastic. The staff was courteous, prompt and always smiled and said "Hi" daily. I thought the hair dryer was missing and called the front desk. I later found it in the closet, but the hotel staff already sent up a brand new dryer for us to use. The hotel is within walking distance of all the sights (Chinatown, Paddys Market, the Rocks, the Opera House, restaurants and coffee shops). If you’re not one for walking you can catch the Hop on Hop off site seeing buses or catch the monorail which is only a few blocks away. Great shopping areas and eating areas close by. We had a fantastic time while we were in Sydney and at the Marriott on College Street (there are 2 Marriotts in Sydney)

Gracious Service!

The first room I was given was not impressive. One bed when there were three of us! The view was nothing but hotels. Plus the AC wasn’t working correctly. Finally the next day they moved us to the other side on a different floor. Two beds and the view was fantastic! We could see center point (largest building in Sydney) and the park! The people that work there are absolutely wonderful. They always asked if they could improve our stay. They always greeted us. I completely enjoyed my stay at this hotel. Now if you want to go to the Sydney Opera house and you don’t mind walking, then this is the place for you. We saw the other Marriot hotel and it looked like you would see nothing but buildings vs. the park at our Marriot. So it’s up to you with what you want out of Sydney. Have a great trip! :)

Sydney is expensive. If you love food..I would look elsewhere. Their food isn’t the best. One breakfast for three people cost $110.00. A packet of ketchup at McDonalds is 30 cents per. I saw a ton of people with backpacks and I bet you their food was in it. A can of coke is $3.50. Most of the time I couldn’t even stomach some of the things I tried. Woolworth’s is cheaper than any other grocery store I saw. Oh! They do have starbucks there but if you go to Gloria Jeans..be careful! One of the workers gave my mom sour milk and said that’s how they have their coffee. Not true! My Aussie friend even told her she was lying. I’m not saying they’re all like that, just be careful. Drink plenty of water. They always give small glasses and a few cubes of ice. I made the biggest mistake by not drinking enough water. Drink plenty of Vit. C! I got so sick! If you go to the Casino..they asked for my passport. Um no sorry, my passport stays in the safe. So we left. They wouldn’t accept my driver’s license..but it would be different if I was 25. All I could do was laugh. I just wish you luck. It can be fun but it can be a total mess.

Good location - good hotel

Consistant Marriott service - friendly, helpful, interested. Enjoyed the club level. Great location for your Sydney adventure.

Public transport is very efficient especially and appropriate for those who drive on the right side.

Good Location & Resonable Price

Good central location...just a short walk to almost any popular turist destination. Two metro stations within a few hundred feet also make it easy to get around. Nice clean room with modern feel.

Good Location, Old premises.

The location of the hotel is great, but it looks, feels and smells dated. Unless you’re planning to not be in the room that much, I’d look for something else.

Great location and excellent value

I know Sydney and chose the location because it put me within walking distance of both Circular Quay/Central Business District (CBD) and the Darling Harbor convention center. Having beautiful Hyde Park outside the hotel was a nice plus. Buses and trains are very convenient from that location, and taxies are reasonably priced in Sydney, but I like to walk. I took a Premier room because I was staying for a week. It proved an excellent value, not only for the extra space I wanted but also for the small kitchenette that included a built-in hot plate, sink, refrigerator and microwave. No coffee maker, however; this is a former British colony, so tea is the prefered drink. There was an electric kettle and instant coffee (and free milk, for your tea, of course). Since I had business lunches every day, and the occasional business dinner, the kitchenette was great for not having to go out for breakfast or for dinner when all I wanted was a snack or light meal. Lobby staff were polite and helpful, and the room cleaners cheerful. Just remember that this is a Marriott 4-star hotel, so don’t judge it against the Marriott 5-star in Circular Quay unless you also compare prices (big difference).

Traveler's tip on saving a few bucks

To take advantage of the kitchenette, you will want to buy food at a grocery store. I found an excellent, large Woolworths a few blocks away (on my walk to Darling Harbor). It had a great bakery section which included meat pies and saussage rolls.

Great location and service but a bit pricy

Wonderful location with a view of Hyde Park. We got there before check-in time to see if they could hold our bags and they switched things around so we could go straight to our room hours ahead of time. The buffet breakfast included with our room was a great choice. On the downside, their charges for Internet usage are out of control, and upon checking us out they tried to charge us a LOT of money for the breakfast until I contested it as it had come included with the room.

Very positive experience

We had a 15th floor room with an excellent view of the city. The room was well maintained and well furnished. The front desk staff were very helpful. The hotel’s location is great. Just a few minutes walk to a train station. And within walking distance of plenty of shopping and nightlife.

Great!

We stayed for 3 nights. We were worried about finding a hotel that was comfortable and centrally located. this hotel was both. The Hotel Breakfast was awesome and not your typical continental breakfast. The King sized bed was the actually very comfortable....something we have found to be a disappointment at many hotels. We had a rental car and the hotel parking was convenient and not a hassel. Now we know where to stay during our trips to sydney.

Beware of your neighbors

Lots of good things about this hotel, breakfast, location, but I had a really hard time getting past the noise of my neighbors. Everytime they opened a drawer or closed their shower curtain, I heard it. It seemed to start at about 5am and went until 8am pretty steady, I swear they must have had 10 people in there to make that much continuous noise. Either that or I was hearing other rooms as well. I had a white noise machine on pretty loudly and it still didn’t cover the sound. My colleague was on a different floor and had no issue at all. Luck of the draw I guess.

Traveler's tip

Bring cash because alot of taxis, restaurants and shops charge you extra to use a credit card. Many don’t take Amex. Also know that though there is no tipping in general, there are service fees. My taxi meter read 44.00 and it cost me 57.00 after service fee, tolls, credit card fee, etc. Be prepared!

Great Stay!

Wonderful hotel, that definitely feels like a high end hotel. Bed was one of the most comfortable we’ve seen in a hotel, and the staff was always VERY catering to what we needed.

Sydney Marriott was great place to stay

The room, the staff, and the location (right across from Hyde Park in the CBD) were all wonderful. My only complaint was the cost of the in-room internet access, which was AUD$29 per day.

Very Nice, Great Location

This Hotel was wonderful, however the guest laundry was ’under repair’ and the closest laundry do it yourself was several blocks away.

Traveler's tip on local attractions

Located in Central Business District so it is easy to get to many places from hotel. Great roof top pool and excersise room.

Great Location BUT...

definitely not a 4 star by any standards. Perhaps less money should have been spent on the lobby area and more on the rooms. My room 808 had furniture so out-dated it was terrible. I was moved from 815 which was really tiny. I booked a "deluxe Hyde Park view" room but there was no deluxe in anything. The bathroom is very outdated, tile is from 1970’s, I had asked that the main light in the entry way be changed, after 7 nights it never happened. I hate to say this but a personal item went missing as well. Staff seemed rude at times and not on top of it. I have stayed at Courtyards that are nicer.

Traveler's tip on shopping

Everything is close by, Oxford Street has a lot of Cafe’s open very early and some nicer shops heading towards Bondi. Downtown luxury shops are a 10 minute walk away and the Rocks and Opera house are about 15 minutes, Sydney is a beautiful city and very easy to navigate on foot.

Great for traveling on the cheap

Centrally located, very close to museums and shopping. The room had nice amenities including a microwave, plates, utensils, toaster and fridge. Spacious bathroom. Friendly and helpful staff.

Traveler's tip

They did not have a hair dryer in the room so bring your own.

This hotel was not very memorable. The only thing I remember is that it had a huge jacuzzi-size bathtub.

Great hotel in Sydney

Good location next to train station which is on the airport line. 15 Min. walk to Darling harbor. 5 Min. by train to Circular Quay where a similar type hotel costs double. Nice rooms, a solid 4 star hotel.

Traveler's tip for business travelers

Get room facing Hyde park. Museum train stop is 5 min. walk across the park.

Loved Sydney and the Marriott

The hotel is in the heart of the Sydney Business District and a block from a subway station. It is a very nice hotel in a great location with a helpful and friendly staff. Also a block from an almost unlimited row of restaurants, pubs, and shops that will serve any needs. I highly recommend it to anyone traveling to Sydney.

Breakfast

Pay the extra dollars and get the breakfast in the morning. It is a great buffet in the dining room on the 2nd floor and well worth the price if you pay in advance, otherwise about $30 USD a person.
