Good location, iffy hotel
My friends and I chose to stay at the Campus Inn because of its location. Its literally about 200 yards to the downtown fun or the lake and the UW union. We were thrilled with the location, but not so much with the hotel. The staff there are very friendly and helpful, but our room was run down and not worth the money we paid for it. It was very small, especially the bathroom. The bathroom door didnt close. There was what looked like mold on the bathroom wallpaper. We had to call down and request an iron and ironing board. The elevators are teeny. Still, I cant say that I wouldnt stay there again just because the location is right and I didnt see a lot of other great options. The afternoon snacks and free breakfast were a nice touch.

Great location
Great location for access to the U of W campus and the coffeehouses, restaurants, etc. on nearby State Street. Friendly staff, comfortable room (although walls seem thin - heard neighbors voices), cleaning staff not entirely on the ball (didnt empty overflowing wastebasket) and continental breakfast somewhat lacking if one is applying strict standards -- although it was definitely more than sufficient. Overall, worked well for a few days in Madison and I would definitely recommend it even if it is not "deluxe" -- charming and comfortable.
Traveler's tip on local attractions
Walk out onto State Street and you will find any sort of ethnic fare or "brew pub" you are looking for. Highly recommend E. African restaurant Buraka, any number of coffeehouses with "college town" atmosphere (Steep and brew, for example) and the great Gelato place.
