Good location. Good hotel. Not luxurious but good for the money.
We were satisfied. We were looking for good location and decent hotel, this does both for the money we wanted to spend. Breakfast area is nice too.

Great if you travel light
This hotel was a lot more luxurious than I was expecting. I was pleasantly surprised. The single room was small compared to rooms in most American hotels, but when traveling alone I usually feel like most of the space in a standard American double is wasted on me, so I didnt mind. Its certainly enough room to be comfortable in. The only problem with the size is finding a place for your luggage; this may not be the best option if you arent traveling light. The breakfast buffet in the first floor restaurant is adequate, though the OJ had a soapy flavor one time. The lunch is quite good (get the chicken). I didnt try the Japanese restaurant on the 2nd floor. The front desk staff was very helpful and accommodating. Most speak fairly good English, although my rudimentary Japanese skills did come in handy. The location is just outside of the densest part of downtown Kyoto, within easy walking distance of the Teramachi shopping arcade, many great restaurants on Kiyamachi-dori and picturesque Pontocho, and the Gion district just across the river. Nijo castle is also quite close. I would definitely stay here again.
Traveler's tip on getting the most out of your stay
Bikes are available to rent for no fee at the front desk. Theyre heavy, steel, one-gear beaters and not in the most pristine condition, but still an excellent option for getting around central Kyoto. Kyoto is a very bike-friendly city: crosswalks on major streets even have designated bike lanes (which are routinely ignored, but still), and the central area is quite flat.
