I expected more... specially from the restaurants...
The check in was fast, doormen were great & helpful. The lobby looks classic & has charm. My 1st room was nice & super comfortable. The bed was the most comfortable ever. The bathroom was spacious, bright & had a great shower with good pressure. Unfortunately we were woken up at 8 AM by construction noise. Front desk said it was not in the hotel (my boyfriend saw signs of construction on the floor we were) & didnt look very happy about getting us another room. The 2nd room had two mattresses instead of one as we had before. The cleanliness of both rooms was impeccable & the housekeeping kept everything organized. The in-room entertainment is limited to a couple of movies & even tough the guest directory says there is a list of DVDs at Concierge, there are none available. The restaurants were my biggest disappointment. The Deli had a really slow service but the sandwiches & pastries were great. The main breakfast room was well decorated & had a great buffet but one of my guests asked for a French Toast & the waiter didnt know what to serve. I think it was brave of him to say that he didnt know what the dish was & he, after being told what it was, went back to the kitchen to have the dish prepared. Obviously the chef didnt know it either & sent something that was not a French Toast & even decorated the dish with tomatoes & parsley. The hotel is THE location in the city & one of the best hotels but some departments are not being as attentive as others.
Traveler's tip
Hamburg is a beautiful city with a lot of charm. There are many attractions such as musicals, museums (from art galleries to miniature toy trains), a great zoo, red light district and harbor cruises. The city can easily entertain couples, families, single travelers or business travelers alike. The best time to visit Hamburg is during spring and summer since fall and winter are normally cold, cloudy and rainy. Hamburg is definitely a city to be visited more than once!!!

Wonderful Hotel!
From the moment you enter the hotel, with the doorman welcoming you (as he has for the last several years), the reception and the room are all superb! The location is the best in Hamburg, overlooking Lake Alster and is very close to shopping and restaurants. I know of no finer hotel.

Excellent experience!
The hotel is beautiful, staff is wonderful, and it is in a perfect location. I could not have asked for anything more. The staff, who all spoke english, were consistently polite and attentive. The hotel is right on the lake, in a safe location that is perfect for walking around the city. There were always taxis waiting in front of the hotel, and the staff could call to arrange one at a specific time if needed. The food in The Grille, one of the hotel restaurants, was wonderful. Afternoon tea by the fireplace was delightful, with clotted cream for the scones and tasty local pastries. This is a great place to stay because you are a short walk to the boat launch, and the double-decker bus tour around the city stops right in front of the hotel. The area surrounding the hotel has many coffee shops, restaurants, and good shopping within walking distance. Even a Starbucks right on the corner. Dont worry - plenty of local places here, too. Enjoy the currywurst and beer - it is good everywhere!
Traveler's tip on local attractions
At the boat launch, you can take a variety of tours. Although they have limited translation from german, it is a great way to see the waterways of the city. The bus tour is a great way to get an overall view, as well as get on/off at local sites. At the harbour, you can take a boat tour around the loading docks. Again, limited translation from german, but you still get great views of the city.
